I do have some possible good news about my lack of computer expertise. I have completed the SOAR program through the Department of Economic Services here in Arizona and it seems that I will be able to attend a paid four day class to pick up some basic - and I mean basic - computer skills such as posting a resume, saving a resume to a flash drive, cutting and pasting, all very basic things I need to know if I am going to compete, as even as server you need this now.....Will be glad to have these skills to cut down on the frustrations in looking for work, believe you me.....Rob
I'm glad you're getting the training, Rob. Seriously, in a previous job I had working with tutors, most of whom were qualified teachers who wanted to make some extra money, the ones who were tech-savvy did far better COMPANY work (not teaching the kids...that just varied depending on their teaching skills) than the ones who were not comfortable with computers. Sadly, I had to turn down some applicants who said that they refused to have a computer or a printer at home, because the whole company was built of entirely outsourced labor (I was in one state, another coordinator was in another state, the boss was in Utah and the HR woman was in Manilla!). I had a few teachers demand that I come to their homes (which were in Vegas, 70 miles away) to pick up their handwritten paperwork once a month, when we really needed them to submit their paperwork weekly and via a computer software program, and then to scan and email their documents to us. Those few tech holdouts didn't get asked back to tutor the next year--it wasn't worth the labor cost to deal with someone who wouldn't or couldn't learn modern business practices.
For gosh sakes, make sure they teach you Outlook, Word, Excel and maybe even Powerpoint. If they don't, then go to your library or adult ed department and get thee to a computer course, even if it's just one on a CD-ROM, and quickly! Good luck!

Ah, shucks, only having fun. Great news Re: the opportunity that's been extended to you to allow you to further sharpen-up your computer skills! P.S. When you're all done maybe you can show me a few new things.

Good on you for getting this training. Knowing these programs are a must IMHO. Also check out your local community college to see what they offer too. I took a MS Office course as a part of a certificate program but they offered non-credit courses as well. The class I took covered Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access, which is a database program.

One doesn't have to a computer whiz, but having little to no computer knowledge or refusing to learn is a serious disadvantage. This is not a criticism at all as you are obviously willing to learn and change that situation. But I have a cousin who just completed her BA in healthcare administration who is now looking for a job in that field. She's not comfortable with computers at all and says so, but I honestly think she just doesn't want to learn. She learned just enough to do college papers but recently told me she tells prospective employers that she's not willing to use programs, so needless to say, she hasn't had much luck landing a second interview, much less a job. This training will be a huge help to you!
Good on you, that's great news. I work in a place that relies on computers, yet many of my colleagues do not really know how to use them. I wish they had your initiative to get some training!
