View Full Version : Heard a Great Horned Owl and its baby!
DS is home for a couple days and we went on a golf cart ride through the field and woods. We heard a Great Horned Owl, and then something yelling. At first I thought it might be something the owl was after, but I realized that the 2 calls were following each other. So I started thinking it might be a baby owl. We got back to the house and I googled it, and sure enough........it was the sounds of both a parent and a baby! We've been so lucky with owls this summer........Barred Owls, Screech owls and now a Great Horned Owl and its baby! This is really special!!

That's cool. I love the sounds of nature. Sometimes we have owls here, too. I saw a pair of falcons on my fence the other day. I went to the window, because I didn't recognize the sound.
Wow........that's great awakenedsoul! I don't believe I've ever seen/heard falcons. What part of the country do you live in?
Very cool! But hopefully the horned owl is just a temporary resident as they eat just about everyone else, geese, ducks, doves, and other owls!:0! One benefit of having them though is, they are one of the few predators that will hunt and eat a skunk! Bon appetit I say!
That's really cool.
I walk in a very rustic urban park along the river every evening and frequently hear owls. The other night while I was walking the dog back in the wetland area I heard an owl and looked up and it was right above me. Then we were walking along about 1 minute later and I heard that owl again and some screaming from another tree nearby. It sounded like monkeys. I had no clue what it was but it scared the dog. Maybe this was some of the owls offspring too? So weird. But really cool.
It makes me happy to hear great horned owls in our yard - I know the mice/voles are being hunted!

I'm in Southern California. One time I had roadrunner in my backyard, too! One of the falcons was in my birdbath. He was huge! The only thing is, they eat the birds. I have to keep my chicken in the coop, too. But, they are beautiful, and hopefully they'll keep the rodent population down...

What a great experience. I have never seen an owl in nature or ever heard one in nature. I love when you have an unusual but good nature experience...:)
Peggy......when we had several barred owls in the yard, I looked up what their natural predators were............and the only one was the great horned owl! So I have mixed feelings....
Bunnys........you probably had barred owls. They get to screaming and it sounds just like monkeys!
awakenedsoul........wow......a falcon in your birdbath! I've never seen a roadrunner (except in cartoons). What do they act like?
Rosemary.........I like them keeping my mice population down too.......but we haven't seen hardly any rabbits this year either........so I guess we can't choose what they eat! haha
Tussiemussies.........hopefully you'll get to hear one some day. They're a real treat! I have never heard a barn own, which I'd love to hear. They sound like a hissy scream.
I just read on a forum last night that owls will attack humans, if they get too close to their babies who are about to fledge. That wouldn't be fun.
Sure would love to have Saw whet owls around. I think they're mostly in the northwest. They are small and make the neatest bunch of little hoots.

I've heard what sounded like a monkey early in the a.m. I didn't know that's what barred owls sound like...we must have those, too.
CathyA,
Yes, the falcon looked so funny in the birdbath. He was too big for it. The road runner was comical. He was running. The cartoon is spot on...I love birds.
I used to joke about having a pterodactyl in my back yard--whatever it was had such an odd call. Maybe it was a barred owl. I've heard more identifiable owls as well.

Very cool!!! Owls are such amazing, beautiful creatures. I spent a lot of my time as a little kid in the Pine Barrens in NJ my brother and I would dissect owl pellets for fun! Sounds gross maybe but we thought it was great fun!
And four young raccoons just tightrope-walked the fence in front of my window on their way to the bird bath. Sleek and handsome fellows!
