View Full Version : Quiet. What are you hearing?
Quiet
While I am sitting here quilting, I have the back door open and I am listening to the sounds outside. It is overcast with some intermittent rain. There is occasional rolling thunder in addition to the quiet rain drops. * This is hummingbird migration season here on the Texas gulf Coast and we have two hummingbird feeders hanging on the porch near the open back door. *I can hear the buzzing whizzing sound of hummingbird wings as they drive each other away from the feeders. *Up near the top of the big live oak tree, I can hear a mockingbird making his presence known.*
I am so fortunate to live where I do and can savor the quiet sounds.*
Sounds like a lovely place Florence!
This morning I could hear a gentle rain out the window. I'm usually hearing all sorts of birds. This summer I'm also hearing lots of rowdy red squirrels. They're so funny! Just the wind through the trees is a nice sound too.
I usually can hear alot of crows talking to each other. I do love all those sounds! I have a couple little water gardens outside the window and love hearing the water trickling down. If I look out the window and a chipmunk sees me, he usually starts yelling at me. I like that sound too!

Tonight I am hearing lots of crickets, but I also live where I always can hear at least some traffic, so I'm hearing that as well. Last night we were still vacationing in the Berkshires, so it was all crickets and no traffic :)
Rosa--we must live on the same street. But the crickets are nice.
Jilly--sorry.

Bunnys - It must be a long street since I'm in MA and you're in VA :) I do live close to US R1, and that runs from ME to FL.
Jilly, I'm also sorry. I've heard that this is something that is very difficult to live with.
A neighbor is running some whining machinery, perhaps a saw of some kind. I have my ears stuffed with foam plugs.
Thanks. It is annoying. The worst aspect is that I have no lifestyle habits to have caused it. No loud music or wearing headphones or loud job or environmental factors. It just started thirteen years ago and only very gradually has worsened. It sometimes interferes with my concentrations and occasionally wakes me. I mostly ignore it, as there are so many more disabling things to have.
The soothing sounds of I-94 which runs along the back of my neighborhood...it is actually a kind of comforting "white noise" sound, as I grew up in a neighborhood not far from where I live now and have been hearing it through my open windows (I've never had air conditioning) my entire life. Some crickets are going at it too, in the undertones.
We have a whining sound from huge commercial dryers running. Checked and found a new apartment conversion of a commercial building a block away had flooded and they are trying to dry it out. Overroad the interstate and even the air cleaner.
Sounds, in our neck of the woods, went through a steps and stages this morning, like they always do. When I first awoke this morning, the sound of crickets could be heard, followed by the soft rustling sound of leaves on the many surrounding trees, and now the crows/ravens are waking. Soon, all the other birds who call our backyard their home, will wake, too, chasing one another around, and singing.
Evenings and early-mornings are my two favourite times to listen.
This morning, only the tick of the clock on the wall, and the faint sounds of a train down by the lake. Occasional jet flies over, very faint again.
There's a distant hum that is the highway. There's dogs pattering across the floor. There's creaking noises as the house wakes up. The cat just watches it all.
Thank you all for sharing what you are hearing!! I love the quiet sounds. Right now I can hear the clock ticking, the fan blowing, and the computer humming.
Crying, inconsolable teething baby. I am enjoying reading about your quiet sounds though. I'm trying to go to that place in my head.

Poor baby! Poor Stella! I remember having a couple of teething rings that I kept in the refrigerator so that baby could chomp away on something cold. I can't remember if it really helped or not. Seems like during teething baby produced more drool than its body weight daily.
Rain in the gutter (it's been raining off and all all day). Birds. Chickens. And a truck using it's air breaks coming down the highway on the otherside of the hill and across the valley. It was just about perfect up until the truck.

Crickets, a distant train. Later on, I am sure I will here the typical siren noises. (not far from a fire station and frequently hear law enforcement as well). Oh, and the fan on this computer.

Crickets from the open window, my dog laying on the rug outside the office snoring and the TV from downstairs. Mainly the snoring. :)
Ticking clock and the wind in the trees, a sound I missed so much when I lived in the desert! Punctuated by occasional sounds from the cats - jumping up or down, trilling to ask me again to feed them (they eat at night, not in the morning!), or quiet kitty feet padding across the floor - only audible at this time of day. And right now, I hear my fingers on the keyboard.
At this moment, I can hear the evening bugs and birds, cars off in the distance, my beagle Polly whines for attention, a dog barking somewhere and then there is the new oil well being installed 3/4 a mile away...24/7 they work. It is suppose to be the well for our neighborhood we understand.

We just moved our water fountain inside, so I am listening to it trickle. Our hummingbirds seem to be gone for the season and now their feeders only bring yellow jackets :(

Peg, your hummingbirds are here with me! They are drinking 1 1/2 to 2 cups of sugar water each day. Soon they will be ready to move on down to Central America and leave my feeders to the wasps here too.

Chatter, 75 or so student typing away at keyboards, the shush-clunk of photocopiers, backpacks zipping, flip-flops snapping and quiet UGG boots walking....
I'm at the library.

I was sad that they left so early, but I am glad they are bringing smiles to you :)
I am out under the oak tree hearing the occasional plop of an acorn falling. We have a bumper crop of acorns this year.
I was just on the porch, with 2 purring kittens in my lap, a hummingbird at the feeder, birds in the distance, squirrels running in the trees and the occasional pecan falling on the tin shed roof. Nothing beats 2 kittens purring furiously and snuggling in your lap to make you smile!
