President Obama is in Cincinnati today and DD got there about 5-6 hours early and is real close to the stage. She's sooooooo excited!
Alan.........will you be there? :~)
Can't wait to hear how it goes and see her pictures.
There's a big rain heading there, so I hope they make it in time.

I think local political rallies like that are sometimes really exciting, even if it's someone I'm on the fence about. After all, you have this big crowd that's passionate enough about...something...to get out there, not just sitting on their butts watching reality TV. For example, I used to have a lot of respect for John McCain (back in the early days of McCain-Feingold) and though he's hardly the world's greatest orator, it was cool to see him in AZ talking about reform at the time, back when campaign reform wasn't a joke. Hope your DD has a wonderful time, CathyA - I went to an appearance in 2008 and it was pretty fun.

LOL, Nope.

I did see Paul Ryan here last week. His 6pm event was a little more worker friendly. >8)

A little, but really who gets home that early?

Me, and thousands of my neighbors who packed the fairgrounds.

Cathy, did she get to see the President? Did she hear him speak?

Yes! And yes she heard him speak. It was quite a thrill for her!
Here's one of the pics she took.

I am always sorry that the incumbent gets to campaign on the taxpayers dime. But so be it, it is part of the spoils.

I believe the presidents campaign committee have to reimburse the tax payers for the cost of the trips. But nothing like the real costs I am sure.

Campaign finance reform and a shorter primary season could save a lot of money.

I'm glad your daughter got to see the president, Cathy. A friend's daughter was thrilled to be able to see him speak in Portland in 2008. And I admit to squealing at the sight of Bobby Kennedy at the Portland airport. I was young, we encountered him at a cross street, and he's lucky I didn't t-bone his limo in my excitement.

I didn't know that the incumbent can use taxpayer's money for some of the campaign. No, that isn't right..........especially if you didn't vote for him. So much waste of our money.............like sending billions to countries that would like to slit our throats.

Back to the original post...............it was a really neat experience for DD. I guess one of her friends got to sit in the stand behind him and shake his hand afterwards.
When I was about 9-10, JFK's motorcade drove through our town, and he was sitting up on the back seat of a convertible, waving. That was cool.

It's exciting to see a sitting President. I got to see Richard Nixon when I was 11. Air Force One landed at my Dad's base. Not the guy's biggest fan as it all turned out, but it was really cool to be there that day.

I agree a hundred percent. But who will bell the cat?

I agree.

In my previous career I had the opportunity to work with White House & Secret Service staff on a dozen or so events featuring Reagan, Clinton and Bush (father and son). Each was a thrill.

Outside of my duties, I've only seen a sitting president once, that being George W. Bush during the 2004 campaign. He came to town for a campaign rally for which my wife scored tickets. When we arrived at the venue, the line to security was several hundred yards long. It was apparent that there were more tickets given out than the venue could accomodate and the fire marshall ended up denying entrance to hundreds of us waiting in line due to maximum occupancy concerns.

Having not seen him before, my wife was distressed to be locked out of the event. Luckily, I spied a local Secret Service agent I'd worked with before and explained the situation to him. He asked me if I was "carrying" and accepted my "No" response, then he graciously took my wife's arm and said "Well, let's just go in the side door". He then escorted her into the venue and maneuvered her up to the side of the stage while I followed behind.

She was doubly thrilled and I scored major brownie points.

I bet! Not even close to a Presidential story, but I did get get a gold star for scoring back stage passes at a Jimmy Buffett concert a while back so I kind of know what you mean.
