Well, the world is my oyster today! I just got back from taking my almost 11 year old granddaughter to register for 5th grade band and renting her instrument (flute). She seems very excited about it, and both band directors made a point of telling me how happy they were to see her so excited. I didn't play the flute, so there is a limit to the help I can give her, but the girl across the street is a high school flautist, and my dgd's best friend's older sister has also played for several years. In addition, I have been e-mailing my best friend from high school, who also played the flute and has taught for advice. My dgd1 is going to be a band geek just like her grandma!!
In addition, I am going tonight to orient on a new case my agency just opened. I should have full time hours next month (will have some overtime this week!!) for the first time since I hurt my back in Feb. It will feel so good to get a full time paycheck, after all these months of part time pay!!! We have been struggling, and it will feel good to have things ease up a bit.
Since I come here to complain quite a bit, and you all are kind enough not to ostracize me, I thought you deserved to hear some good news from me, for a change. Thanks, all!!

And we like good news! Congratulations, on all fronts! I've heard that kids who play instruments are also good at math. I guess in my family that could be proven out as my son, who is very musically inclined is good at math and my daughter, who can't carry a tune in a bucket, isn't. But two isn't a very good study...>8)

So how is your back doing? Back trouble is so frustrating! You can't sit, you can't stand, you can't lie down, you can't breath even without pain.
I'm glad things are looking up for you!

Congrats!!

We're also going tonight to the band meeting to decide what instrument my little one will play! She was thinking clarinet. When I get home tonight, before we go, I was thinking of playing some songs that feature each of the instruments offered so she can actually hear what they all sound like and make a decision based off of that. I'm thinking she may like the sax and she really loves Dave Matthews Band, so we shall see :)

I really hope your daughter enjoys playing the flute! And congrats on getting those full time hrs back!

Thanks so much, everyone. It feels good to be happy again after so long. My parents were music lovers, and I know they are glad to see dgd1 interested in playing an instrument.

DGD1 came home yesterday with her flute, music and stand. She doing pretty well at being able to make some sound with it, and I tried it today and did not too badly. As a clarinetist, this is really different for me, but I am studying fingering charts so I can help her with that when the time comes. So far, so good, and she seems to enjoy it and she likes the band directors. Who knows, I may end up being able to play the flute?!

Former band geek here, band camp (Interlochen), college band and community symphony and I get so excited about young people wanting to carry on the music geek tradition. Even though you don’t play flute (yet that is because it is an easy instrument to learn) you can teach her much about music beyond fingering charts. And so many more ideas for birthday and Christmas gifts with all the music/flute themed items out there.

'Peter and the Wolf' is a wonderful way to introduce her to all the joys of symphony. Everyone is represented here, with a wonderful story to go with it.

Thank you both, goldensmom and peggy, for some great ideas! DGD1's birthday is Friday, and she is at that awkward age where it can be hard to buy for her. She wants cash so she can pick out her own things, and that's fine, but I don't really think it is a birthday without a gift or two. Maybe a little flute charm for her to wear on a chain and a CD of Peter and the Wolf. Also A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Now I have a mission!
