View Full Version : Romney's 47 percent comment
Romney said:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it -- that that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. ... These are people who pay no income tax. ... [M]y job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

He's not bad, he's... contorting himself. Here's an editorial in today's Seattle times:

If he's not bad, he sure is lame...

My first reaction when I heard that Romney had said this was relief.....really. This is the kind of foot in the mouth that is not going to sit well with many, and it may give the Obama camp some mileage. After that I actually felt some respect. Don't get me wrong here - I don't like Romney and am really disgusted that he'd make such a stamement and I'm further less than enchanted that there is a segment of the US population that is OK with this statement - STILL it was a gutsy and honest thing to say whether I like what was said or not. It shows who he really is and what he is really about.....It is up to each of us to decide whether or no we are OK with this mentality or not. Rob
It was a really dumb thing to say, or at least a really dumb way to say it. Even so he does have a point. While certainly not all of the 47% that don't pay income taxes are living in a welfare state I do think a majority of that group are much more likely to vote for the President than for Mr. Romney.
