View Full Version : Dr. Ellie's Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye
Has anyone heard of this or tried it? I just bought the three mouthwashes and am looking for the gum/candies and will use up my Tom's toothpaste for now.
I've read a lot of positive reviews on the system on Amazon so I'll try it until I run out of stuff and see how it goes. My only worry is mouthwash----my "supertaster" tastebuds will be burned by them. I'll have to dilute them and hope it's as effective.
Lately I've been a human guinea pig for all sorts of personal care routines. I'm in the middle of my two month no poo baking soda/vinegar hair care trial, I've gone soap-free in the shower (no one near me has fallen over yet) and I'm still using my homemade deodorant. Need to get off the internet and stop finding these things to try.

I've been quite curious about no shampoo. I have waist length hair... I am wondering if you know anyone who has gone this route with long hair?
And... I really like going to the dentist! Of course, I have fabulous oral health, which helps

Sounds reasonable to me. I always rinse with baking soda and water after eating to reduce the acids on my (terrible) teeth.

I've done Dr. Ellie's system for three or four years. It's the best thing that I ever learned. I used to have a lot of teeth problems. You get used to the rinses. I order the zylotol gum from her website. My teeth feel like pearls! I'm really happy with it. I haven't been to the dentist since I started her program. It's an investment, and you have to be consistent. I get the Crest regular toothpaste on sale when it's 10 for $10.00. I buy the Listerine at Costco, and get the Closys and ACT at Walgreens.

I heard mouthwashes were unhealthy, though it seems a possible cancer connection isn't particularly well supported at this point. I guess I'm just skeptical we need all these products and that they don't do more harm than good (although maybe if one has particularly bad breath, I don't know). They are afterall just another set of chemicals to expose ourselves to.
And what's wrong with Toms of Maine anyway? I use another natural toothpaste brand. I have some minor gum disease but it's improving by actual measurements carefully taken at the dentists office. How? Brushing my gums when I brush my teeth as the dentist advised and it's really working. I have tried xylitol gum (though not that brand), but haven't bought any lately. Certainly if you want to chew gum anyway, it's the way to go (as opposed to constant sugar on your teeth or artificial sweetners).

I'm so glad it's working for you. Her website says that Wegman's sels the gum and Zellies mints so I'll probably get them on Monday.
Her theory makes perfect sense. The mouthwashes, and especially using fluoride worries me a bit because of all the bad things about fluoride, but I'll give it a shot. Are you able to do this every 12 hrs? This seems impossible for most people who work. I haven't been to a dentist since 1987! What sort of improvements have you noticed? Did you get the gumline staining mentioned on her site? I'll try anything to avoid going to the dentist.

Just google "no poo" and you'll see tons of info with all lengths of hair. After your hair adjusts, you can wash less often. The trick with long hair is to use a boar bristle brush to move the oils from the roots throughout the length of your hair. Some people try cleaning their hair this way and love it; some give up. I found that applying the vinegar/water rinse with a spray bottle is much easier and you won't get it in your eyes or nose (ask me how I know what this feels like!).
Try it for a few months. It doesn't have to be for forever, and if you hate it, go back to using something like sulphate-free shampoo to keep your hair healthy.

I buy the gum in bulk when she has specials with free shipping. As far as improvements, I never have sensitive teeth anymore. You can feel that it rebuilds the enamel. I believe that Listerine was formulated in 1887. Things that last that long are usually effective. You're not ingesting the flouride. You just rinse and spit it out. It's really saved my teeth. I had root canals, cracked teeth, etc...it was miserable. I got all my work done, and then found this. I don't remember any staining, but I've been doing this for years. Yes, I do it every twelve hours. If you can't, you can chew the gum or mints until you have time. The main thing is to stop the bacteria. Her book is excellent. She has a very informative website, as well. www.zellies.com (http://www.zellies.com)
Thanks. I'm going to stick with this. Can't wait to see the changes, although I don't think there's anything really wrong with my teeth. Not overly sensitive, unless my bottom teeth bite into ice cream. Since I haven't been for a checkup for so long, I don't know if there's anything to worry about, but I worry anyway.
I'll get some Zellies on Monday at Wegmans and decide which ones I like and stock up on them when she has sales.
UPDATE: OMG!! My teeth feel so clean! I can't believe the difference in them. Stocked up on mints and gum from Wegman's and I really like them. No icky sugar aftertaste. This would be good while dieting, because I hate to eat something when it feels like I just cleaned my teeth.
Can't wait to see how they are in a few months. Thanks again for your post.

Hi - I ordered some Peelu gum made with xylitol and am looking forward to trying it! I hope it works as well as the Zellies - I couldn't find a place to buy them.

That's great! It's really amazing the difference in how your teeth feel with her system.
gardenarian,
You can buy the mints and gum on her website, too. www.zellies (http://www.zellies).com The main thing is to get 100% zylotol.

Weird - she doesn't say anything about flossing. That seems to be the most important part to me.
She doesn't discourage flossing, but she says that many people don't floss correctly. If they have gum problems already, they could be doing more damage. I still floss. In fact, 30 years ago I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed, and there has always been a bit of a gap in my gums between the last molar and the area where those teeth were. Flossing was always easy in those areas, but last night, I had trouble getting the floss in there; perhaps the gaps are closing up? I don't think it could happen that quickly, but my teeth look different to me already (the edges of my teeth blend into one another more, so they almost look more like one solid white tooth instead of individual ones, where there is a definite line between each tooth). And they're definitely a bit whiter.
It's only been one week, so I can't imagine what the next few months will bring. Maybe next spring I'll shove my bottom teeth into some ice cream---that'll be the ultimate test!

Hi pony mom,
The only thing that concerns me with this method is that mouthwash kills the bad bacteria and also the good bacteria in your mouth. The idea sounds good but in the long run don't know what the long-term results would be...:)

Weird - she doesn't say anything about flossing. That seems to be the most important part to me.
What I remember reading was that she designed it for people with special needs who couldn't floss or take care of their teeth. After I rinse with the Closys, little specks of food always come out. It reminds me of flossing.
Before I started her system, I flossed every night and brushed my teeth three times a day, and I still had chronic teeth problems. I think it was financial stress, worry, fear, ect...I was grinding my teeth at that time. I also had debt and hated my job.
It's really worked for me. My father just has nubs where his teeth used to be. I wanted to make sure I didn't end up like him. MY neighbor told me that her Armenian grandmother lived to be over 100 and she still had all her teeth. They found some zylotol gum with her things when she died!

Xylitol gets rid of harmful bacteria and also promotes tooth-protective non acidic bacteria. The Listerine opens up the 'pores' of the teeth, enabling the ACT fluoride rinse to be absorbed more easily. She stresses to use the products she recommends exactly as she says; the specific order is for a reason. The paste and rinses are half of the program; the Xylitol candies and gum is the other half. I know that the mints and gum really make your teeth feel clean. So while you're killing off the bad stuff, the good stuff is taking its place.
The website is so full of information that it took me a few days to get through all of it. What sold me is that the program uses products you can buy anywhere and not things sold only by her (exluding the Zellies candies, which are hers. I found them in Wegman's.) There are other sources of Xylitol out there.
Awakened Soul, somewhere I read that if you got both of your hands really dirty, including dirt under your fingernails, the Closys would draw the dirt out of places soap and water couldn't. Maybe it was from one of Dr. Ellie's videos on Youtube. I should try it one day. My teeth don't seem to need flossing every day since using Closys.
So, I was wondering how everyone is doing on this method? I've been doing it for 3-4 weeks and my teeth feel pretty good. But they felt pretty good to begin with, but I do think I see a difference, especially in my gums. I've never had gum disease, or root canals or anything like that, but I am getting to the age where stuff starts going wrong (is there a kiss your eye doctor goodbye LOL)

My teeth feel cleaner and are definitely less sensitive to cold. I need some serious dental work done and am trying to get my teeth in the best shape possible before starting.
I also read that Xylitol kills cold germs and that chewing it can help prevent sinus and ear infections, so that makes me feel even better about using it.
I'm still doing it and really look forward to cleaning my teeth. I switched to Listerine Soft Mint, which I can actually use full-strength. Before starting this, by the end of the day I could feel some (plaque?) buildup at the base of my molars. Now, they feel clean all day. I can't stop smiling!
The Zellie's candies and gum are great, but I've also bought a bag of Xylitol sugar. If I wake up at 5 am, I take a 1/4 tsp. of it, swish it around, and go back to sleep. My teeth and breath are instantly clean and fresh. It's a bit tough sticking to 7 grams or more a day, but it's working. Sometimes I just dissolve 1/2 tsp. of the sugar in water and sip and swish; that works well too and it equals 1 gram.

I've been doing it for about four years, and am really happy with the change. Sometimes I have trouble finding Closys. I need to start doing eye exercises again, too. I used to do them everyday when I practiced Integral Hatha Yoga. They help keep your eye muscles strong.
Glad to hear the system is working for everyone. I'm so glad I found it. I had so much trauma at the dentist when I was younger.

So what does your dentist say about your teeth? How are your check ups? I just ordered the closys at Amazon.

I don't go to the dentist anymore. I had a lot of work done right before I started the system. All I know is that my teeth feel better than ever! I get compliments on them, too.
Cool. My next check up is in about 6 months so I'll be very interested how it goes. The hardest part for me is the mints several times a day. I just don't remember to do that. I've never been a gum chewer or mint eater so it's been hard.

Anytime there's sugar or food on my teeth, I chew the Zellies gum. I automatically have some after my coffee with cream and sugar, or after a meal. It becomes a habit after a while. I think she says it takes six hours for a cavity to start to form from the bacteria.
awakenedsoul, did your front teeth have slightly transparent areas near the edges? My bottom teeth are half solid, half semi-transparent. I think it may be acid erosion and I'm hoping this will go away. You mentioned that your teeth looked like pearls, so I'm guessing they are solid white now?

pony mom,
Actually, I said that they "feel" like pearls. They don't look perfect, but they look good. I don't know if they had the transparency you describe. One of my bottom front teeth is a little discolored, but I'm okay with it. At least they are healthy and they don't hurt! I used to have terrible teeth problems.
Mine have never bothered me or hurt, but I haven't been to a dentist since 1987 (embarassed to admit) so I'm hoping this will reverse anything going on. People tell me if there was something wrong, I'd know it; not sure if that's true. So I'll stick with this forever and whenever I do go, hopefully this will have done some good.
Thanks for this thread! I read it months ago and it stayed with me because I just ordered the zellie gum and mints and picked up the rinses to start the program.
I would love to hear how everyone is doing with it. :)

I have shoulder length (or just a bit longer) hair.
I used to have to wash and condition my hair daily (using pantine). Then, my hairdresser recommended that I move to going to doing it every other day, and then move it to doing it a max of 3 times a week (washing).
Then, I moved to no-poo. I discovered that what I need is vinegar rinse and then a coconut oil condition. And, I only do it once a week. It works really well.
IN between, I use a boar bristle brush to brush my hair because this pulls the natural oils down to the ends of my hair (off the scalp). My dandruff and cradle cap both cleared up. I now do it Monday afternoons at the pool (and then don't wet my hair when I am at the pool on other days).
It makes my life so much easier (because I sponge-bathe every day instead of shower, which has really saved my skin from drying out), and can just get up and fix my hair. :D
In terms of my teeth, I do oil pulling in the am, with a sea salt and water rinse followed by natural Nicco (ayurvedic) toothpaste. In the PM, I do it the opposite way (brush then pull).
It's great. :)
I have a question for people using Dr. Ellis' system: since she advises doing the program after you eat breakfast, what do you do before you eat? It seems weird (ok, kinda gross) to eat without brushing first. Do you use one of the rinses to wash out the mouth? Or just do a quick brush with toothpaste?
Zoebird: has the oil-pulling worked in reducing/eliminating dental problems like cavities and such?

I've always brushed my teeth after breakfast. To me, it seems weird to brush first, since your teeth get food on them from eating. Also, I have my coffee with cream and sugar, so I like doing her system after breakfast and coffee.
I guess if I was kissing someone in the morning I would brush my teeth first. I would still do the entire system after eating.

If I wake up during the night I'll dump a 1/4 tsp. of xylitol in my mouth--instantly fresh. When I wake up, I'll rinse my mouth with water and if I hadn't had the xylitol during the night, I'll have it then.
After doing the final Act rinse, you're not supposed to eat or drink anything for half an hour. I'd starve to death if I had to hold off on my breakfast for that long. Food won't taste right after all the minty stuff in your mouth.
I try to get 7 grams of xylitol a day; some are granules, some are candy/mints. I found that my mouth feels so clean from the Zellies that I hold off eating sometimes just to keep that fresh feeling. I love the mints.
To be honest, I haven't had any major dental problems in a very long time (cavities, etc since childhood). So, I can't really say. But, it does make my teeth whiter!
In terms of my eating habits, I don't eat after 7 pm and I don't eat before 11 am usually. This is a 16 hr fast with an 8 hr eating window. So, i wake up and do my routine, and it's still 4 to 5 hours before I eat. Then I eat two meals and a snack across the 8 hrs, then brush/pull after before the long fast.
My husband's toothpaste has xylitol, so maybe i'll alternate use.
