View Full Version : Dumb plumbing question

I have an outdoor faucet that feels like the internal threads are stripped- I can no longer adjust the flow, its just full on. So it needs to be replaced. I've never done this, nor do I know anyone who has ever done this.

So my question is: are these typically just threaded at both ends (in which case I can hire a handyperson to do it) or does the inside pipe need to be cut and resoldered (requiring a licensed plumber to do the job)? I'm not comfortable doing this one myself, even if was relatively simple, because it will involve standing on a ladder in the basement and twisting motions that I can't do with my wrists.

Thanks!

Hi Herbgeek,
I don't know how to replace those, but have you tried looking on You Tube? There are alot of great how-to videos there. good luck!

I had to do this for a couple of broken ones after a freeze when Someone Left Hoses Attached.

Google: "replacing hose bib" for zillions of approaches.

Can you see the pipe from the inside? They are both sold as threaded ones, and solder on ones. Both can split from being frozen as Bae mentioned, or they have a washer inside of them that can deteriorate to the point of non existence and then when you open it, you get full flow. If it isn't split and you can see a brand, you could just unscrew the bib and replace either the washer or the whole thing. (I would avoid mixing brands in case they have different tolerance designs) I think there are a few Youtube video's on this.
