I think there are a lot of things we give reasons too that have no reason.

I agree 100%.

I think that a lot of this is done with good intentions - not wanting others to feel excluded, not wanting to be to pushy about things. I'll make fun of myself for being "cheap" because I buy things at thrift stores, when the truth is that I can't understand people who buy a whole new wardrobe every year and pay retail for it. (Though they do keep the thrift stores going!)

It's funny that you say you "justify myself being a vegetarian because it is good for the environment and animals feel pain" but you really don't like meat. I actually like meat (well it's been a long time since I had any, so) but I find myself telling people "I don't care for it anyhow" because I don't want them to think I'm self righteous!

Oh what tangled webs we weave...

Hey, why did you delete that? It looked like it could have been interesting.

Not really sure what this is about but if it has anything to do with concern that others are judging you or about judging yourself by trying to look at yourself through the eyes of others, I say let it go. And the older you get, the easier it will be.

Seriously, I think it is the nature of being human to default (all of us, most of the time) to a state of self-absorption to the exclusion of really caring that much about others. We're really too preoccupied about worrying about ourselves to worry about others. That said, if we think others are judging us for what we are doing or how we're living our lives, we're probably wrong. Most people are too concerned with themselves to care what we're doing.

Boy, is that ever the truth! Pretty hard to explain to my adolescent dd!
