View Full Version : Optical illusion
I was getting some of my DS's toys together to give away. One of them was a train track/highway type toy. As I was putting similar-sized tracks together, I came upon this optical illusion. Its so funny and unbelievable. Neither DH nor DD believed this picture, until I showed them the actual pieces, that they were the exact same size. Even then, they could hardly believe it! Its really funny to be so fooled visually.

Very neat, CathyA! I too love optical illusions :)
Very cool. We have similar track and it might be fun for the boys to show their parents.
No they're not! :~)
LOL Kestrel, I wouldn't believe it either, if I didn't see it with my own eyes! When I showed DD the actual pieces side by side this morning, it was like "this can't be happening!!"
VERY bizarre!
I wish I could put a little video on here of actually picking up the smaller one and putting it on the larger one....then you'd see they are exactly the same! Something's very weird in the universe! haha
Here's the picture I took of when I put the seemingly smaller one on top of the seemingly larger one.

I just keep shaking my head. I just can't believe it.
I'm shaking my head, too... Why am I having such a hard time believing this?! ROTFLMAO!
CathyA. So, all of the corner pieces (in the set) are exactly the same size?
I'm just in the midst of preparing supper, and am sipping on a glass of wine, which by the way, I'll be pouring myself another before revisiting this thread! LMAO!
Yes, Mrs. M., all the curved pieces in the set are the same size. I know its hard to believe. I'm having trouble believing it too. When I take the piece on the left (that looks larger), and place it to the right of the piece that looks smaller, it becomes the smaller one!

That is a great illusion. Thanks for sharing...
Back, looking at this darned thing again this morning! LOL! It's driving me nuts, CathyA!
You posted this just to drive us all crazy, didn't you, CathyA! http://ic.hobh.org/forums/images/smilies/1237398v1rcp2k7wb.gif
OK, look at the photo closely ... they do NOT line up EXACTLY!!!!
Its driving me nuts too Mrs. M! It defies science/nature/common sense, and everything else! Actually, it probably doesn't defy the science of the brain/eye. It probably makes complete sense. If they looked the same size, we would probably fall over and have a seizure. :laff:
Kestrel.......but if I lined the top of them up exactly, the one on the right would look even smaller!
hahaha This is so BIZARRE! it really does blow my mind.
Here's what you all can do. Cut 2 pieces of paper in a similar shape as my tracks and about the same size. Then lay them side by side and see if you can duplicate this.
I'm sure you have nothing else to do today. :~)
I'm just arguing with you for the sake of arguing :~) (better than politics; right?) ... anyway ... no, they definitely don't look the same to me, but maybe I will try your experiment and see what I can see ... :D

O.K. Here is something else very interesting. Put the picture of the two tracks up on your computer. Now, get up, walk to the other side of the room, at least 8 or 10 feet away.....VOILA.....the pieces of the track now look virtually the same size........
I am always SO entertained when I use a bit of my very (self)limited internet time and come here.......you never know what you'll find. Bye......
I tried something a little similar loosechickens.........I looked at the 2 tracks eye level about 3-4' from the table. They looked like the same size, until I got close, and the one got smaller than the other.
Haha.......do I have too much time on my hands? :~)
Hope you're happy, CathyA. All you've accomplished is giving us all a serious case of brain-crunch! ROTFLMAO! http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smileys/giggle1-smiley.gif?1292867603
LOL!! If it makes you feel any better, my brain is crunched too!
