I have the ingredients for shabby awesome ensembles in my closet right now.

I NEVER look like the blog photos when I put together shabby ensembles.

I only look poor-white-trash and ridiculous. It doesn't help at all that I'm over 50.

Yea, I don't spend that much time thinking about appearance, but it's not worth looking completely shabby and ridiculous just to save a little money. Of course if you are 21 and normal weight you can pull pretty much anything off (really it gets harder to pull off even in one's late 20s).
