I am vowing to only use hankies for my nose. No more tissues.

Why is that? I think tissues are far more sanitary than hankies when I have a cold. I can only use them once or my poor nose gets so chapped. Plus I dont want to carry around a used hankie. (I just got over a cold while on vacation and used a whole box of tissue.)

I take the middle ground; hankies changed out daily when healthy. Tissues made of recycled content when ill. Works for me!

funny.....the status quo for me is to use a kleenex when i am not sick and only use a hankie when i am sick. the hankie is the only thing i can use when sick that WON'T make my nose hurt.

as for "carrying around a used hankie"

i assure you kind Govenor, i have more than one.

Highly commendable of you, heydude!

You make an excellent point Re: the cloth hankie being more gentle on ones nose. My husband was laid-up at home one year with a severe bug, and had blown and rubbed his nose raw, using a combination of toilet paper and Kleenex. Grasping for an alternative idea, I had him try using a flannelette diaper, and that proved to be the bomb!

Ever since that day, flannelettes (all around), for when anyone is sick.

Flannelette blowers, come cheaply and easily using an old flannelette bed-sheet or pyjamas.

They also have tissues with lotion in them. That is what I use when needed, I believe the brand is called Puffs Plus with Lotion. My nose never gets dry or sore at all! I recently was thinking about getting some hankies for regular use. Not sure yet, but they remind me of when I was a little girl and how pretty they were. :)

Heydude...I think you are starting something akin to the salad spinner debate! :laff:

Hankie user here.

Hankies are the best when you have a cold. Tissues irritate an already sore nose.

My one tip for hanky users--gather them up and wash them in a net bag. Otherwise, you will lose your prettiest hankies to the washing machine monster who also eats socks.

I also find cotton handkerchiefs to be more nose-friendly. When I have cold I rinse them out frequently in very hot water and hang dry - they dry very quickly.

Love my cotton hankies. Such practical elegance! Wouldn't use anything else when I've got a bad cold.

Where do you buy pretty hankies from these days? :)

I found reasonably pretty ones at the Dollar Store last year. I keep a cloth hanky in my purse at all times, as it doesn't shred and can withstand the abuse of being roughed up with all the other crapola in my bag. I use Kleenex when I'm sick, because I don't have enough hankies to get me through a full-on cold.

Thanks Selah, after I posted I found them on Amazon. They are just what I am looking for -- something really pretty.

Just a tip, when I am sick I use the brand Puff Plus With Lotion, they are so soft there is never any damage to my nose. They also have Puffs with Vicks, and the smell is great for that stuffed up nose!:)

I don't get colds or major allergies or anything like that {sorry :~)} but I do have cats that cause a slightly runny nose year-round (and I couldn't care less; I love them anyway), and the wonderful hot chili sauce Sriracha really really makes my nose run, and I won't give it up either. I've always used whichever-brand-is-cheaper "kleenex" but hankies might be a better choice. Hadn't thought of that.
