View Full Version : Interesting, yet frugal, arts & crafts supplies for a 6 year old girl?
Maybe Stella has some good ideas, lol!
My goddaughter will be 6.5 at Christmas. Her mom said arts & craft supplies would be a good idea for St. Nicholas Day & Christmas gifts.
Interesting, yet frugal, are the main points.
What suggestions might you have?
Keep an eye out for the Michaels and Joanne store coupons. I think kids that age are still big into glitter stuff which can be pricey, but very much appreciated for their art ideas.
I used to put together art kits for my nieces when they were small. I'd put in stuff to make things like pipe cleaners, felt, glue, glitter (of course!), kid scissors, markers, googly eyes, stuff like that. I'd put everything in a reclosable plastic box (like those plastic shoe boxes) for easier clean up.
Coupons are great, and get what she likes to do already; maybe let her give you suggestions, and then add something extra, perhaps for the two of you do do together. She is old enough for you guys to make melt and pour soap, supplies and kits at Michaels. If you get that for St. Nick, she could make presents for her family and her little friends.

You can get a lot of crafty things from Oriental Trading, they are cheap and chock full of crafty items.

The menu on the top has a tab for art and craft supplies...

Oh I know this age. Here are some sure hits, not totally free but also not an expensive kit. And I have hardly met a kid who didn't love the following
* melty beads, these kits are different beads and different hard plastic trays, then the kids makes a design and someone melts it together with an iron,
* model magic clay, it is the best air dry clay out there. Plus you can use markers on it to decorate the creations when they dry. Add all those other goodies like pipe cleaners and googly eyes and feathers to make awesome creatures.
* other beads, pony beads and a lot of yarns and strings. Throw in some different goodies like keychain rings and there are many options.
I would recommend doing these things with her, they are fun and therapeutic.
A few more ideas:
A 6-year old can learn to crochet. My daughter and niece and nephew had a blast making things last summer, freestyle. It can be very creative.
Beading was a big hit in our house, too. Get a couple packs of plastic beads and some hemp beading cord. There are beads with letters on them that DD enjoyed for making personalized bracelets.
A new pack of watercolors and a large-sized pad of watercolor paper (get the paper with a 40% off coupon at JoAnn or Michael's). The paper makes this gift - so much nicer to use than standard paper.
Great ideas from everyone.
Embroidery is a hit with my kids. That's pretty cheap. You can get hoops at almost any thrift store for next to nothing. Patterns are cheap and the needles and threads are cheap.
Felt crafts are fun and cheap too and simple sewing stuff. You could give her a sock monkey kit.
I don't know what your budget is, but this is on my 7 year old's Christmas list. It's a reusable kit to make stuff out of cardboard and recyclables. You can make some pretty awesome stuff. Make Do (http://mymakedo.com/)
I have given away a lot of these cutting tools, and they go over well:

My daughter loved her big set of gel pens. Still loves them - we have replaced many times.
Something like this: Gel pens from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-12-27457097-Gel-48-Piece-Value/dp/B000S161FO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351119391&sr=8-1&keywords=gel+pens).

The gel pens really show up nicely on black paper.
If you go into Walmart (I know) in one of their isles they have such a huge assortment of Crayola products. They all look like so much fun. You could really have fun picking items age appropriate there.
