This just melted my heart this morning....

I asked my 8yo son if he wanted to wear his afterschool sports practice uniform to school or regular clothes then change.

His response, "I'll just wear my uniform to school, I don't want to waste laundry"

That's my boy!!! There is nothing that beats the earnest goodness of a little boy.

Any small simple victories you want to share?

My daughter was as excited about having pomegranate seeds in her lunch today as some kids might be about single-serving junk food.

Great ones!

My oldest daughter was looking at the American Girl catalog and exclaimed, "$225 for a doll bed! That's ridiculous! I could build that for $10 and it would be even more awesome."

I hear you on the AG catalog, Stella! Because of that I gave my daughter a blank notebook to be her craft inspiration notebook. She can paste pictures she sees of things she would like to make.

Love that.

We do something similar Rosemary. I'm sure you've found this too, but the girls have more fun planning what they are going to make and making it than they ever would playing with the storebought toy. Buying stuff is boring.

And as a side note, I didn't pay $225 for their beds, so I'm sure as heck not paying it for a doll. :)

Having a blank notebook and a stack of magazines and catalogs is what I remember keeping me sane when I had chickenpox in kindergarten. I kept that book for years and years.

And I would argue that there is little difference between being sick and in kindergarten and being well and burdened with responsibilities in middle age....

DD was eying the AG hair kits in the magazine when my mom was visiting. They came to something like $50. Insane.
I took her and my mom to Target where they spent an hour finding the perfect doll hair accessories. DD spent about $12 on them and had a lot of fun discussing the options with her grandmother. I made her a beautician's cape at home from a scrap of waterproof tablecloth to complete the set.

Aw, that is so sweet and considerate!

Mine have been figuring out what kind of Trick or Treating costume they can put together, with what we have around the house. "So, mom.. we don't have to waste money buying one at the store". They really are getting into it and have done this on previous years. Though, I surprised them last year with costumes from the consignment shop that I've actually donated to Goodwill, so hopefully another family will find that on the rack for $3 and be so excited. (It's an American Girl costume, and I know that couldn't have been cheap in the catalog.. I got it for about $8 last year at consignment).

SimplyL, I love homemade Halloween costumes. Those are the most fun IMO.

Rosemary, I like the hair kit idea. That could be fun as a Christmas present.

That's another thing we are doing together, planning homemade Christmas gifts. It's so much more fun than fighting the crowds at the stores would be.

DS#1 has these cheapo hiking boots from Walmart that he got last winter. He walks all over campus & they aren't all that waterproof & look like crap. I said I'd been looking at getting him new boots this winter and he said "These are fine." I objected and he said more emphatically "these are fine!" Well, that's one less thing to find money for lol That's my frugal boy!
