Today I used the last of a huge supply of garbage bags we got for free years ago. It' might be that we've had these longer than 3 years, don't know.DH got them in one of his jobs where he hauls away stuff from a house that is sold. These bag were very odd size, but they worked for us.
Now we'll have to go back to buy garbage bags.
What a nice savings that was. I buy Glad Kitchen Catchers, Regular size, 100 to a box, yet even with all the recycling and composting we do, I'm taken aback by how often I have to buy them...

Iris lily: Well it was nice while it lasted!
We mostly use the white kitchen bags from Costco - I think they are 13 gallon. A box costs around $15.00 and lasts well over a year, probably closer to two years.

About 2 years ago I switched our kitchen trashcan with big black trash bag as liner out for just a wal-mart bag hanging on the closet door. That reminds everyone to recycle what they can instead of just tossing stuff into the trashcan. wal-mart bags compact more tightly in the big trashcans outside whereas the big black trash bags don't. wal-mart bags also line the small bathroom cans as well as the laundry room. I think my roll of 50 big black trashbags has lasted over a year now, they are mostly used for sorting the recycling and a lot of times the guys at the recycle center will give them back to me to reuse.
Good three years! We got a case of the large black industrial grade bags, one year ago June when a plant was closing and hubby was liquidating. We use one a week as required by the garbage company for use. I can not imagine how long it will take to use these. I should look to see how many were in the case! We also got liquid soap. Sadly that was used up last month. Office supplies........we will never use that many paperclips and such!

I too am a devotee of the Wal-Mart bag as a trash can! Target bags or Office Depot bags are even better but we don't go to Target or Office Depot all that often.

Useful post because this is one thing I can put on the list for Sam's Club--garbage bags. There's not a lot we buy there.
I don't go to the other big box stores often at all (and never Walmart) so dont' have free bags to use. Sam's makes you use their cut down boxes.

yes - not too proud of how many wal-mart bags we end up with but living in a tourist town they are the cheapest place to shop for household items and general grocery.
I am just about to buy garbage bags, as the city of Seattle banned pastic bags, which I support. I cannot recall the last time I bought garbage bags. At least 2 decades ago...

That is great savings Iris. Lasted a long time too.
I also use grocery store bags as liners for my small trash cans...
We use our recycling service to keep stuff out of landfil so only have a bag of garbage a month.
Free bags do help though.
do you use bags to carry grociers home? if so, can you use those?

Garbage bags? Are there non plastic garbage bags?

We use those up for cats litter boxes and dog poo.
Redfox, and possibly others, what's the difference between garbage bags and plastic bags? I want garbage bgs that aren't plastic.
Wow, that is great.
We have a neighbor who is an extreme couponer. She recently went through her stockpile which was overflowing. I'm not a big couponer, so this is really wow. just. wow. to me. :) She brought over some overage from her stockpile for us. Suffice to say that we will not need to purchase pantyliners, shampoo, razors, toothpaste, or deodorant for the next 6-12 months.

I keep hearing about all kinds of great finds by people in the business of cleaning out people's homes, or after foreclosures. Wish I could do that!
your garbage bags remind me of a 1,000 foot long roll of tinfoil I got from Costco many years ago. Can't remember exactly when, but it was quite some time ago. I just finished up the roll this week, and I'm guessing the price has really gone up now.:(

On the flip side, my town moved to plastic garbage bags about 15 years ago. You have to buy special garbage bags from the town for $1.25 or $1.75 depending on the size. Recycling, and they recycle almost everything, is free, curb-side pick-up. So you have the choice of tossing something in your trash can and paying to have it hauled away or tossing it in your recycle bin and getting hauled away for free.
Some of us only put out a trash bag every 3-4 weeks. Yes, it's plastic. But it has improved the recycling rate in town.

1,000 feet of tin foil!!!!!!! I love that!
I've said here many times that one of the advantages of hosting a potluck dinner at our house is that inevitable people leave hunks of tin foil here. I live for that! haha.
That is awesome, Miss Cellane!

This season reminds me of one of DH's better finds. I had asked for Christmas for a terrycloth robe in a pastel color. Terrycloth, not that polyester fleece junk, and terrycloth is expensive.
He came home a few days after Thanksgiving grinning like a cat and held up a nice, new, terrycloth robe and said "isn't this what you want?" But it was purple. Still, it was very nice looking. I was happy with it! He had pulled it out of a bunch of stuff he was hauling off to the dump.
I looked up the brand online and it was retailing for around $70.00

If Seattle is like San Francisco what she means is that stores can't give you plastic bags at checkout. We've had that for a couple of years. And now they have to charge $.10 for even a paper sack.
Every plastic bag that finds it's way into our house gets used for kitty litter and every paper sack from Safeway gets used for recycling. I scored a bag of about 30 paper sacks by the trash bin of our building a few months ago which should prevent us from having to worry about what to use for recycling for at least a year.
Between composting and recycling everything we only have one 13 gallon bag of landfill garbage every 3 weeks or so. The hassle with that is that I have to take the kitty litter down to the trash room every time I clean the box. I can't just put it in the trash can because after 3 weeks the whole house stinks from having a garbage can full of mostly 3 weeks worth of kitty litter, even if it's in plastic bags that are tied closed...
Since we live in an apartment we don't pay for trash service. However, the city has priced it to encourage recycling and composting. You only pay for the landfill bin (large or small) and they will give you a plenty big recycling and composting bin. Our landlord was able to get a second recycling bin for no extra cost since everyone in the building is pretty good about sorting. The city's goal is 2/3 of all waste diverted from landfills.
Iv got 3 cats and 3 dogs.I use the bags the food comes in for trash and recyclables.I get mower parts and other stuff sent to me at work.Somtimes it comes in boxs.I use them for trash and recycling too. When somthing comes in a plastic bag Ill reuse that for recycling. I live alone so I dont have much trash anyway.
