View Full Version : Cheap High Speed Internet
What high speed internet do you have?
Any companies known for good (long term) deals? (not those silly 3 month only prices).
I once saw a company advertisting about how little they pay their CEO so they can deliever low prices but I forget the name of it.

We have Comcast. When we got it, the choice was Comcast (the local cable provider) or DSL from Qwest/CenturyLink at one quarter the speed at a greater price (since we had to pay for a land line we wouldn't use) or whatever satellite TV offered (pathetic). Comcast still is the only cable choice, but download bursts to 20+ Mb/sec now (was 4 Mb/sec when we started). CenturyLink offers FiOS now, at competitive speeds, but even with their five-year discount rate, they'll still make us pay for a landline we still won't use. I've been asking satellite-TV users what they are using for Internet, but results have been mixed ("I share my neighbor's Wi-Fi" doesn't help us).

Aren't you in Mpls? We have ours through the city (via USI wireless). Good connections and very cheap. I pay $175 for the year.

We have Verizon FiOS. Not your cheapest option, that's for sure - but, about six months ago our initial two year agreement was expired. (You know, year one is really cheap so you change to them, and then year two is very non-competitive.) They only lowered the rate by $10 upfront, but also gave a gift card of $250 for a two year renewal, which made it worth it. When asked about the rate to cancel home phone service, the price actually increased by $5 per month, due to some bundling discount, so the landline remains.
We have only had one outage with FiOS, due to the battery backup box being unplugged (really, someone should tell me what these things are - so I don't do that!). We used to have outages / need to reset the modem on a regular basis with our old provider - sometimes lasting a day or more. Since I must work from home occasionally I am ok with paying for reliability.

We have only one choice and that is Comcast. It cost $60 a month!!

I also have Comcast. I pay $39.95 a month (after all taxes and fees) for high speed internet. I think you need to make a phone call and talk to someone about lowering the tier your service is on.
We have AT&T high speed and pay $43/month with taxes. I've heard that we can get a lesser cost, if we contact Directv (some joint military discount that we haven't pursued yet). The service is pretty good. May not be your definition of 'cheap', however, we have paid much more for less speed at our former duty station.
I agree that when you are out of contract and floating month to month with these guys, give them a call.. let them know you are shopping for another provider and have no qualms about switching services.

We have 4 different Internet providers in our area and every 6 months or so I rate shop and threaten to switch if they don't lower our rates. Usually worst case I at least get the new customer type rates each time and a higher speed connection for less money. It is a pain and if I had a regular job I probably wouldn't have time to do it. I have found that sometimes I can get better rates by going into the local store instead of just calling or using the online chat.
wow, USI is really cheap especially if you pay for a whole years worth up front. SWEET!
THANK YOU CATTLEDOG!

We've been really happy with it. I there was one outage in two years and it only lasted a couple of hours. We did buy the cheapest plan/slowest speed, but it's fast enough for us. We can still watch videos, TV shows, download music, upload photos, etc. I haven't noticed a difference between this and the DSL we had with Qwest previously. We don't do any gaming or anything like that though.
hmmm cattledog, hmmmmm
my current centurylink is 1.5 mbps. the lowest USI is 1 mbps. i could also do the 3. interesting, ineresting.
too bad there are so many upfront costs. installation is 99. modem is 80. you pay for the entire year up front.
i see reviews say they have bad customer service and some areas have really poor reception. you have had good so far?
wow, cool!
by the way, it is so hardddddddddd to actually figure out what companies are charging for phone, internet, cable, etc.
it is difficult enough to find out the "promotion" price. but then you have to find out when it ends. and then you have to some how dig through fine print and figure out the regular cost once the promotion ends. even then, it will say you have to have another service wtih it AND GOOD LUCK FINDING THE COST OF THAT OTHER SERVICE!

Combined services can suck. Comcast (what I am stuck with), is cheaper by a penny for basic cable and the internet service. They do have a lower tier as someone else mentioned, but you have to go in and request it, as it is basically a always on dial up speed. (fine for ebay, email, text type of stuff, but you have to wait for Youtube video's to load. With it you can't use Netflix or those type of services if you do and downloading a new Linux distro, can take most of the evening, and your bandwidth)
Google is doing the fiber in KC just a short bit away from me. I have already heard negative and a little positive. I had hoped they would expand as a $300 charge, would get you seven years, no more cost, cable compatible speed (not the dial up tier). I am not moving for just internet access though.

I get a little annoyed that the "reward" for being a loyal customer is subsidizing low rates for new customers.
I work from home so a solid internet connection is really important, so I stick with the one I have ($60/month). If that changes, I'd be more likely to jump ship as "new customer" discounts run out and the best deal is actually going with another company.
