View Full Version : Sweaters: do you hang them or fold them (shelf/drawer)?
I was just putting away some sweaters that had air dried and this question came to me.
How many of you hang up your sweaters? Or you do store them folded (on a shelf or in a drawer)? For me, it depends on the type of sweater. For the light, fine knit cotton shells and sweaters from Land's End/LL Bean I have several of, I hang them. To save closet space, I put both shell and matching cardigan on the same hanger. When I hang to dry, I put them inside out, so the shoulder marks from the hangers don't show. Yes, I still need to get a drying rack.
I have two bulky, heavy cardigans that do get folded on a shelf in my closet.
I always end up with wrinkles when I fold my fine knit sweaters, which is why I hang them.
Hey, Tradd, are you stepping in for Mrs-M? :)
I hang cardigans and fold crewneck sweaters and stack them on the closet shelf. My MIL used to fold sweaters a certain way that made them flatter and easier to store--but I never got the hang of it.
In the winter I wear light turtleneck sweaters, and those get folded and put in the drawer.
Catherine, it did cross my mind that this was just the type of question Mrs-M would ask! :)

Sweaters get folded and put in drawers.
Hanging can cause shoulder bumps. It can also stretch out the sweater over time.
I iron everything anyway, so the fold marks on the sweaters get ironed out before I wear them.
Besides, I have a tiny bedroom closet and the sweaters would never fit if I tried to hang them.
Some of both. Lightweight cardigans are hung on padded, non-slip hangers so I can grab them & go. Heavier sweaters are either folded in half and draped over a wooden pants hanger rod, or folded and put on a shelf, or under the bed in pullout baskets. Being in Seattle, I have many options for many layers. I just bought towel racks that hook over the bedroom closet door, to drape my many beautiful shawls where I can see them. They're my preferred top layer right now.
I fold my several shawls over a hanger in my closet.
Fold all sweaters and have wrinkles.

I hang them all because I have more hanging space than drawer space, but there are a few I would prefer to store folded if I had the space.
Mine are all pretty thin so I just hang them, I'm more into layers than bulk.
I also hang the light ones and fold the heavy ones. The heavier cotton ones just seem to stretch if hung.
Living where I do, I don't have any heavy sweaters. I hang all the light ones but would fold heavier ones which might stretch.

Definitely fold mine as they would just get stretched out at the shoulders from the hanger since mine are on the bulky side...:)

I hang them. I hang all my clothes.

Still waiting for Mrs M to weigh in!
I'm not a small guy so my sweaters are kind of heavy. Any hanger I've tried gives them wings on the shoulders so its strictly a matter of folded on a shelf.
Still waiting for Mrs M to weigh in!
Not to worry, Mrs-M is just taking a little hiatus from the boards to spend more time with friends and family. She indicated to the mods that she might check in, but is going to be a little scarce for a month or so. I think everything's fine with her, but we all know how crazy the last few months of the year can be!

Cedar chest that I inherited, that also gets used as a seat/window seat. Perfect thing for storing sweaters.
Fold and store all the way! I practice loose folding when it comes to knitted/woven goods. This is one department I wish we had one or two old antique armoires for such!
so nice to have you back, Mrs. M. :)
Glad to have you back, Mrs-M, as well! :)
Hi, Zoebird and Tradd! Thanks for the warm welcome. I am so happy to be back.
