I'm going to attempt (!:D) to learn the Russian alphabet, some vocabulary and speak some basic phrases. Plenty of Russian folks at my church, and some of them speak little English. It would be very nice to be able to say hello, good morning, etc. I've got several friends (Americans) who are fluent in Russian (and have lived/traveled there extensively) who I've asked for resource recommendations. I found a website with videos that shows you how to write the Russian alphabet, so I'll have something interesting to occupy me this winter.

And no, Iris Lily, this is not some major thing to occupy all my time! This is just something for fun, that I don't have to spend a huge amount of time on or work at if I'm not up to it.:laff:

The PLAN is to get all financial planning and estate planning stuff DONE by the end of the year. That includes funeral planning. It truly is a HUGE task but will be so happy when it is done. I am almost finished with the financial stuff and still need to do a few forms for estate planning. Just reading about funeral planning so far. I have been working on this since July. I have a fire under me to get this done!

Back porch/laundry room/storage closet therein. Gross dirty. Messy and disorganized to a point I don't recognize. Hasn't been repainted since we moved in in '93.

Indoor job. Must do this winter. Might skip the painting. But MUST DO! (says I trying to psych myself up for it.....)

I'm making a family cookbook/history, with photos and stories. May or may not get it done this winter, but it is a winter project for me, since the summers are full of yard work and gardening.

My projects are all simple living related - decluttering the house and getting our annual expenses as low as possible. Our electric bill last month was half of what it was a couple of years ago. I think next month will be even lower. We get graphs from the electric company and it is fun seeing those kw go down each month. This past week I stopped using the dryer and we replaced an energy hog TV. This weekend I defrosted and unplugged our separate chest freezer and I'm going to see if we miss it. We stopped buying a lot of frozen stuff from Costco in favor of more fresh foods so I am not sure we need it any more. I'm also going to see what that does to our kw usage to see if using it was worth the energy costs.

Yeah, and not something "easy" - like Spanish - that shares the Latin alphabet. Noooo, I have to go pick something with a totally different alphabet, even.

Google Translate is danged handy, let me tell you.

Well, I'm coming off two very challenging things that I did very well on, so I guess "easy" doesn't cut it. Obscure does! ;-)

You're lucky that you can pick things like this up and really learn it. I don't know if I could ever get the hang of any of it...

Wow learning Russian - what a challenge! Then you can learn to say "Vodka" 100 different ways :-)! I don't really have any project I'm planning on doing in the near future.

I am going to read Hemmingway and Thoreau, take as many online free classes on assorted topics of interest I can find, bike everyday (in MI) even if the wind and snow is blowing(then I will just ride around the block) but mostly to see if I can be as car lite as possible, repaint the living room, learn something new everyday, But mostly dream of spring :treadmill: so I can get off the treadmill!

My big project for this winter is to dedicate more time to my martial arts training. I have one more rank test to take before I officially start training for my black belt test, but the rank test coming up is a biggie. It is the first time I have to demonstrate a certain level of fitness (running, push ups, and sit ups). It is also the point at which I have to demonstrate technical competence of all of our blocks, strikes, and kicks. I've been training in this school for 3 years and it will probably take me another 4-6 months to get ready for this next test. I usually take 3 classes a week as part of my training, but this winter I will try to expand that and do martial arts specific workouts 5 times per week (this is in addition to my long distance running that I do). Aside from that, I'm also planning to add swim workouts back into my training as I'd like to do some more triathlons next summer. I'd like to get back to the point where I'm swimming 15,000 yards a week spread over 3-4 workouts. With focused effort I expect that will take me about 5-6 months, longer if I'm not that focused. :~)

I'm not even going to mention my grad school related projects...

Way too many projects over here!!!

I am rededicated to learning Spanish, and working my way (slowly) through Pimsler as it seems to be the course that I learn the most. I've done 2 lessons of the100 or so I have. Also taking classes at Coursea.org, started my Cryptology course last night. I almost hyperventalated at the number of minutes of video lecture there is for 1 week, but it's not like I have to actually do anything except watch. It is for free, and just for fun. I'm starting a logic and reasoning class there the end of the month, and if the lecture load is anything like this one I'll be watching videos in all my free time during the overlap of 2 weeks or so. I'm also finishing a sweater I'm knitting, and I have yarn to learn to knit socks. Maybe I can knit and watch videos at the same time? Or not...

Oh, and after the 1st of the year I have the project to get a job back in the States.
