For the first time ever, voters rejected a ban on same sex marriage in Minnesota.

Two other states, for the first time, approved same sex marriage by popular vote. (Maryland and Maine).

This is what is to just about this:

In Minnesota, the Republican controlled House and Senate put the gay marriage ban on the ballot not because they care about leading "holy lives" or "one man plus one woman" (and I can honestly say that because the Majority Republican leader that initiated it was caught cheating on her husband with her male staffer). The reason they put it on the ballot was because in the past, it lets them gain power. It gets their base out to vote.

Guess what?

Not only did Minnesota reject the ban, but Minnesota voted the Republicans OUT OF OFFICE!

Instead of gaining seats, it made them decrease seats!

The democrats gained control of the House and the Senate from the Republicans!

We voted Republicans in to office in Minnesota to vocus on jobs. All they did was put social issues on the ballot. If this does not send a strong message that we wish you to stop playing politics with our sacred rights, I don't know what does?!

I think CBS news put it best. The world is changing and America is becoming more and more diverse. These diverse populations are who put Obama in to office. He won them by huge margins. The Republicans can no longer rely on "old white men." They are going to have to change their strategy to get on board with diversity or they will die out.

Great great great news Heydude! Truly wonderful news.

There's a part of me that thinks the Republican party would rather die out than adapt to a diverse population.....Time will tell. Rob

Washington too.

Indeed. And the Forces of Evil didn't even manage to get their "no gay marriage" initiative on the ballot.

Win!

when gay marraige was approved in NY it was barely a blip on the screen except for the small amount of people who benefitted from the legalization of their long, loving relationships.

I think we have much bigger issues to worry about than trying to impose moral or religous decisions on others who mean you no harm.

YAY! Now we just need to repeal DOMA at the federal level so gay marriage is truelly equal.

EXACTLY. The Pro-gay after party was filled with long time couples CRYING their eyes out.

What exactly do the anti-gay side do when they win or loose? I mean, what does it EVEN MATTER to them and their lives?

This is an excellent question. I am so happy about all the equal rights achievements yesterday. Although, as a native Californian, this also makes me feel sad and angry all over again that my state can't get it right. *sigh*

I think if California had another chance the results would be different.

I was quite happy to hear that Minnesota rejected both ballot measures - marriage amendment and voter ID. And overjoyed that the Dems are taking back the state house and senate! Now maybe Gov Dayton can get things done!

I grew up in MN and visit family here quite often, and am quite relieved at the election results!
