View Full Version : Really bad taste in my mouth all the time
This is driving me crazy. I have this awful taste in my mouth all the time.....like manure! I have been having alot of post nasal drip, coughing up phlegm. I have GERD, but its not really bothering me.
Today I bought some mouthwash, hoping that would help, and it burned the heck out of my tongue! Should mouthwash do that?
I do have a little pain over one of my sinuses. (I've had 2 sinus surgeries in the past).
I had "hairy tongue" a few years ago. That's when you have a bacteria living on your tastebuds. :0!
Its funny, but I had alot of mouth problems when I was in perimenopause. That was about 7-9 years ago. I think I'm having a flare-up of my hormones again, and now I have this mouth problem again.
Its so strange. I usually never use mouthwash............Is it supposed to burn your tongue real bad for about 15-20 secs after you use it?
This taste is so awful. My breath must be awful too. I don't want to be around me. :~)

Hi Cathy, yes the mouthwash also burns my tongue too because it has alcohol in it. Actually when you are using mouthwash you are killing off bad bacteria in the mouth and good bacteria too. So it's not the greatest thing to use...
Maybe you have an issue with your teeth or gums? Have you had them checked recently? Do you still have your tonsils? Food particles can get stuck in them too and stay there and smell bad. Also you just wrote that you have what seems to be a sinus infection. The infection can give you bad breath.
Do you change your toothbrush often? I rinse mine with mouthwash every time I am done with it in order to kill the bacteria on it. Your toothbrush can be just a harbor of bacteria if not kept clean. You can also buy a tongue scraper in the stores now and you scrape your tongue with it to get all the stuff off it. That can also cause bad breath.
If you are having any GI problems that could be a factor too.
I would buy sea salt, some groceries stores carry it I think the name is Hain, and use that in saline water to gargle and wash out your mouth. Make sure you keep your toothbrush clean by pouring Listerine over it when done, and try the tongue scraper and have a checkup with your dentist.
Brush your teeth in the morning a second time with baking soda.
When you brush your teeth also go in circles and brush your gums at the same time. Do you floss? That could be a big issue too. You can also get hydrogen peroxide from the store and swish it in your mouth but make sure you spit it all out. But don't use this after you have cleaned your mouth with baking soda.
Sometimes a funny taste in the mouth can indicate another type of illness going on.
I have to bug my husband to clean his CPap machine he does not do it frequently enough and with vinegar too to disinfect. Maybe you are doing the same thing and we have to bug you about it? LOL
Well I hope you find out what is causing this :) Christine
Thanks Christine! Lots of good suggestions.
I don't clean my cpap machine probably as often as I should. I do use distilled water. Yeah, I think you're going to have to keep after me too. ;)
When I first started using it 3-4 years ago, I cleaned it alot, but it was just too much work to do so often. Plus, so many people on the cpap forum said it didn't really seem to affect them.
It looks very clean! haha
No tonsils here. I floss a couple times a week. I do brush my gums too. No apparent problems with teeth or gums.
Okay, so I'll clean the cpap more often, and clean my toothbrush more often and also.........clean my mouth appliance more often. But I do suspect that its my sinuses......but we'll see. I like the idea about using the mouthwash on the brush, maybe instead of my mouth, since I don't want to kill the good guys too.
Gosh.......I sound like a real dirty person! haha I'm really not!
Thanks again!

No you don't sound like a really dirty person!!! Bet it is your sinuses too...:)
Have you tried gargling with sal****er? Two to three tablespoons of table salt added to 8 ounces of the hottest water your mouth can tolerate, will help kill bacteria and odour. It will take a few days for the process to start working, but you'll notice a huge difference right away. (Best done before bedtime.)
ROTFLMAO! Check it out everybody! I typed in "salt water" (all one word), and the program starred it. Shame on me for using such dirty words!
Hmmm... I'm trying desperately to decipher the starred word that's so bad. Anyone got it?
Nope. Should be interesting though.
I'm thinking the same, Jilly! LMAO! So silly, isn't it.

hmmm - your stars are for a rather vulgar slang term for female 'private parts'.... maybe it's a regional thing? Still a silly censoring, IMHO!

I bet you have a sinus infection. I've had one recently and it gave me horrible breath! Thankfully, it has resolved thanks to an antibiotic and the neti-pot.

Just FYI............I quit using garlic powder on everything and the bad taste went away! I thought I was doing something healthy, but I just couldn't live with that bad taste in my mouth. And it wasn't even a garlic taste. Anyhow..........just giving you garlic heads a head's up. :~)
CathyA. If you adopted a regular regimen of gargling with salt water, your breathe would be unaffected by odours associated with strong food groups.
Glad it the mystery was so simply solved! And doubly glad it wasn't a sinus infection!
Thanks Mrs. M. and Florence.
Mrs. M.........that's good to know! I'll give that a try.
It's, da bomb, CathyA! You just have to adjust the amount of salt to your liking. I'd start off with 2-3 tablespoons, then make stronger/weaker, as you see fit.

Glad CathyA that you found the culprit and that it was an easy fix!
