I was working with a friend today who has pretty severe eczema, and she was feeling so much better now, that she wants to try make up, but is afraid to try make up! I understand!

so, we did some testing today (on her arm, not her eyes) of some home-made, all-natural make-ups that. . . turns out. . . are easy and awesome.

Here we go:

Foundation: simple oil of your choosing (something light for the face is a good choice, like almond oil or similar).

Foundation or finishing powder: cocoa and rice bran powder -- mix it into a ratio that matches your skin tone. mine uses a lot of rice bran. lol You could also use zinc oxide powder in this mix to add sun protection.

Blush: dried flower petals made into a powder, and mixed with white rice bran powder to get the intensity of color that you wish (or, use it straight, if you are using, say, relatively soft pink rose petals).

Eye shadow: for colors, use different flower petal powders and mix with rice bran powder to create different hue values; for neutrals, use cocoa powder (obviously, you need straight, no-nonsense cocoa powder) and rice bran powder to make your hue values, and to make blacks and greys, use home made kohl.

as a base, before you put on the eye shadow, put some oil on the lid. it will help the shadow stay.

Eye Liner and Mascara: for brown, use more cocoa powder and mix it with an oil of your choice -- sesame, olive, and castor are 'traditional;' for black, make kohl.

To make kohl, buy some almonds (preferably halved), and burn them on the stovetop in a heavy skillet. Burn them to black. Transfer to a mortar/pestle and make into powder, then transfer to a jar.

Tinted lip balm: using berries, beets, or other dark fruits/veggies, juice them, then simmer it down if you want more intensity. Mix with coconut oil (as it stays firm at room temperature), and then pour it into pots (that you can get your finger into) or old lip balm containers (wash them first, thoroughly!), and you have tinted lip balm! For added sun protection, stir in zinc oxide powder when you stir in the coconut oil!

For my friend, we basically used cocoa powder, rice bran powder, bright pink rose petals (we were able to get these from a florist and dry them ahead of time -- takes about a week), and beets. We were also able to find zinc oxide powder very easily here.

It was very inexpensive and fun to do! She had neutral eyes, pink cheeks and lips, and a subtle, smooth overall look to her face. And, it had SPF protection, too!

She noted that it kept well throughout the day, but she needed to "re-smear" the eye shadow a bit about 1/2 way through the day.

Also, it all removes very easily with an oil cleanse at the end of the day!

I thought it was really fun, and thought that maybe I would make some for myself. And I don't even wear make up! But I could be ok wearing cocoa powder and rose petals! And, it's an easy way to keep the sunscreen on.

Ah, and home-made sunscreen -- take your favorite lotion and add zinc oxide! Or, make your own home-made lotion and add zinc oxide! It's excellent!

Also, this is so inexpensive compared to "real" make up!

The zinc oxide cost us $6 for 500g; rice bran powder was around $5 for the bag we got (can't remember the measures). The cocoa powder wasn't that expensive either ($9), the beets were $2, and rose petals were probably the most expensive -- about a hand full $3. But if you have a garden, there you go. :)

And, it made a lot of powder. I'm not sure how long it will last, but it's a LOT of powder!

Anyway, thought I would share.

I'm thinking of doing my eyes/lips -- which is what I generally prefer -- in a very natural look. :) I can borrow some of her powder to make mine, she said. :) I'll be making light browns. :)

Thanks for posting this. Was thinking that beet powder might work for somethings and tomato powder might be good for people with a more golden skin tone.

It IS a great list, but.....um.....this is the Food and Recipes subforum. :)

Sure, it is food and recipes, is it not? ;)

I didn't think it fit in healthcare, so. . .

Open forum would work for this subject, but kinda fun to find it here amongst the recipes. :)

I have very sensitive skin, rarely wear make-up, but have tried some homemade natural make-up concoctions in the past - and while looking nice, I still did have bad reactions after a few hours. I have lots of allergies though....

Your friend may do well with her natural make-up, but wearing it consistently, day after day, will be the true test of whether or not it will bother her skin...and it may very well flare her exzema in the long run. Natural doesn't mean it won't cause a reaction. Kind of like those whom are allergic to ragweed, will have the same reaction to some herbal teas...BTDT

I think it really depends on the origin of the eczema, honestly. with oil-cleansing and cautiously using the make up, she might be ok.

I don't wear make up, really -- haven't for years.

but these days, I've been thinking about it. I go in phases, I guess.

I learned, for example, that the small skin conditions that I have (capillary breaks) are treatable via laser. I'm thinking about doing that, and possibly removing the tattoo that I have (interesting, that... hmm). Found a really high quality place that does it and also provide free consultations. So, it's an option for 'clearing' my skin (i think my skin is great overall, btw). But, we'll see. :) that's well down the track, really. I just want to know about the technology.

And my friend wanted to wear/try some make up, and so i figured we could start here. :) And I thought . . . hmm. maybe I want to try make up too!

It seems like the oil in the "mascara" would run and smear the mascara all over the bottom and top of the eyelids. I wonder if there's anything else that can mix with the cocoa powder that would dry and stay put.

It's really nice of you to work with your friend to help her find some makeup that works for her.

I like to use aromatherapy for healing and have a bit of eczema on my elbows. I use the essential oil patchatolli on it and it worked very well, the only thing is it has to be used every day or it comes back. There are other oils that are recommended. Here is an article:

This is so cool, Zoebird! Do the rose petals really color the rice brain? How do you dry everything? ( I grow roses and would LOVE to try this). I also just got a food processer back--if you have any good drying/"cooking" instructions I'd love to see them. . .
