How would this happen?

Last night I was sitting at the table and got a text message on my cell phone from a number I did not recognize (out of TX). It said, "Hey Kay??" And that was it.

I responded by texting, "yes? who is this?" but got no answer.

My daughter lives in TX, but also did not know who it was. My # is only known to family....weird.

Anyway...I don't get (understand) VOIP.

VOIP stands for Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol). VOIP carriers operate outside normal telephone systems or POTS (Plain Old Telephone System or alternately Post Office Telephone Service). I use Google Voice VOIP service alongside my regular cell phone. This effectively gives me the ability to have two different numbers on my phone, each with voice and texting ability.

I received what I thought was a text message from work one day. On my cell service, you can send a message to someone, which it sends as a text. Between that, and using the VOIP, you probably replied to a machine, and not to the person who sent it.
