View Full Version : Healthwise coffee?

My heart seems really susceptible to caffeine (irregular beats). Even though I mostly drink decaf, I think it has more caffeine than I can tolerate, heart and GI-wise. It might also be the acid. So in my online search, I've come upon Healthwise coffee. Their coffee is low acid and the decaf uses the swiss water method and is organic. I'm thinking of ordering some. Anyone else ever try this brand?
Tea is even harder on my GERD.
Thanks.

I used to be highly susceptible to the same reaction from caffeine, but since drastically upping the fruits and veg in my diet, and lowering everything else, I find that I react a lot less to it.

As far as GERD, I believe it is the acid and not the caffeine from coffee that is the trigger; in tea, it might be the tannins. I mostly drink rooibos and chamomile teas.

Thanks Rosemary. Have you ever tried an organic/swiss water process/low acid/decaf coffee? I'm going to Whole Foods soon, maybe they have something. Just don't want to give it up!

CathyA, I gave up coffee a long time ago because for me it wasn't worth the stomach troubles. I haven't experimented, although I do experiment with different teas. I find that strong black or green tea = reflux, but the rooibos and some herbal teas are well-tolerated. I avoid herbal teas that are based on mints, hibiscus, or rosehips. Mint relaxes the muscle that causes reflux, and the others are too acidic.

I did used to enjoy a good cup of coffee, though... so let me know if you find a solution!!!

My FiL swears by this coffee for low acid. Roasted in Ely, MN. I have only tried it once but dang, it was smooth!

It's available online or locally in the Twin Cities at Kowalski's Markets.

Thanks Rosemary. I seem to have more heartburn with teas than coffee and coke. I always thought that was strange.
fidgiegirl.....thanks so much for that link! I'll definitely consider ordering from there! It sounds really good.

I can drink coffee okay as long as I have something alkaline like a banana shortly afterwards plus a lot of beans (high magnesium), fruit and veggies each day. Otherwise I used to get the weird heart beats and insomnia. If I get an acid stomach despite the produce and beans for me peppermint or Chamomile tea is usually a good antidote.

I really like the taste of coffee so I am glad to have finally found a way to drink a cup or two a day without any problems.

Why not give it up? There are so many yummy healthful alternatives to coffee. Coffee is quite expensive, and really increases your carbon footprint, too.

I gave up coffee 3+ years ago for stomach issues, followed a year later by tea. What I didn't expect was a dramatic decrease in anxiety!

I use herb teas (chamomile, mint, flowery blends), and swear by Caffix, a barley/malt/beetroot powder you mix with water. It's more robust than herb tea. I've also tried other brands (can't remember their names at the moment); Whole Foods and most health food stores carry them.
