I think I do a lot of this. I gave each of my staff and one person who helps me with spanish speakers a 'love note' last week. I hate the generic good job notes so I found something unique I could say that made it clear I was paying attention to what they do. I am busting my rear to give a shift off to one person, I know her daughter is 18 and lives in another state, my staff has sold everything and lives with a roomate to get back on her feet. So we already have 5 days off but I am sure going to cover so she gets just a little more time.
One thing I really liked was how to put tasks in their hands, and pretty much all reasonable people come to similar conclusions about how to get a job done. I can't say my staff have it totally together but I started the year with setting out the parameters and goals we had to meet, wrote the schedule and plan for 2 weeks and then started releasing control. Have I had to step in? yes, Have they done things I would not do? yes, But it is lot easier to talk about how it worked when I didn't spell out every detail and they can then get mad at me instead of us all problem solving.
Other things in this article were good as well. i really would like to share this with our supervisor. I am considering passing it on to someone up the chain of command rather anonymously, many of our managers are great like this and some could use encouragement on the softer skills instead of the hard line.
