View Full Version : Avoid GMO food, says Kaiser Permanente.

Excellent. Unfortunately, they're sounding the alarm at least 10 years too late. Unless you buy all organic, it is not easy to avoid all GMO foods.
There was an initiative on the ballot in CA this year to require labeling. The food industry somehow managed to find an assortment of doctors and 'health professional' types to do ads telling people it wasn't necessary and that GMO's are perfectly fine. Opponents, including a large number of major food corporations, of course) managed to raise over $45M. The people in favor of the initiative weren't able to counter in any significant way, at least that I saw, so it ended up not passing. :-(

This article says “Limit exposure to genetically modified organisms...”
Emphasis mine.
What food products do you consider "genetically modified organisms?" Clearly it carries a meaning that does NOT mean something benign like all of the "genetically modified" fruits and veg in my home garden. DH grows only hybrids. Well, I do have a couple of species iris 'n lilies but we don't eat them.
Aside from GMO big ag crops, what are the GMO minefields I will find in the grocery store by the hundreds? I am always curious how those who jump on these vague articles interpret the (IMHO) non-specific information contained in them.
Most people skimming this article will conclude that the frozen corn they eat, or corn on the cob, is a GMO product. The illustration is intended to provide that falsehood, advertising comes from all sides. The average joe doesn't realize that field corn reference in the mice study is not what people eat. There are many reasons to stay away from processed foods including that they usually contained high fructose corn syrup. GMO is the least of of it only part of what they should stay away from.
Nearly all commercial corn, potatoes, soy products are grown from GMO-seeds. And since those ingredients are in nearly every processed food, that means that to avoid GMO, one should avoid processed foods. But it also means that if you like to eat corn, cornmeal, potatoes, tofu, soymilk, etc, that organic is a necessary choice.

Can you show me a source that says the corn we eat (sweet corn, not field corn) is GMO?
A GMO potato, one variety amount hundreds, was bred in the US. It's not used any more. http://www.livestrong.com/article/218439-what-varieties-of-potatoes-are-gmo/

Coming soon to a market near you. Of course, most of us are eating field corn second hand when it's fed to livestock.
Also, it seems frankencorn is threatening traditional cornfields in Mexico. http://www.chinadialogue.net/article/show/single/en/3676-Corn-conundrums-in-Latin-America
I would love to think concern is unwarranted, but it seems like we've let a toxic and powerful genie out of its bottle.
And there's an app for that:

I always get a sick feeling when real life starts to remind me of the old science fiction novels. I do not believe that many "scientists" do it for the good of humanity. I really believe they do much of what they do just because or because they are paid to do it for a business and then it comes down to cash.

That's why I cast a jaundiced eye at those who make science their god. It should be an objective process, but it too often is not.

Buying all organic, all the time now. It's worth it.

GMO sweet corn is pretty new, but it's out there. I expect we'll see a lot more next year:

I'm going to see if I can find the variety of Monsanto sweet corn seeds mentioned in the article, maybe we'll grow some. We'd be the first in our neighborhood.

But not the last, as apparently frankencrops are hard to contain.
