The last of the green ones turned red and DH had them last night. (I don't like old tomatoes.....too mushy).
I'm glad to be done with all the work, but I sure do miss the fresh cucs and tomatoes! Only got about 10 mangy butternut squash this year and turned them into puree the other day for the freezer.
DH is so much more help in the garden than he used to be. :+1:
He helped me remove all the tomato vines and cages and we added some leaves and compost to the soil. We're ready for next spring now, but first.........a long winter's nap. :)

I have about a dozen green-picked red tomatoes left and think I will roast them to make sauce. they don't have that fresh-picked flavor, for sure. The garden is ready for winter snow, I wish that I were!

We ate our last one this week too. It was good and now we will go without or buy the pink ones in the store. Bleh!

We ate our last one today! Well, I did, as DH is like you Cathy - he says it was too mushy. But it had a lot of flavor! We had it on a romaine salad, said romaine out of the garden - and that's it now, 3 more bunches of romaine out there and the garden will be ready to plow for winter. We got it all cleaned up, just waiting to finish this lettuce.

We just won't buy the tasteless store-bought tomatoes - we use canned for all our salads and do without on sandwiches. Have you tried canned tomatoes in your salads in the winter? Well-drained, they're a darned good substitute - much better than the store-bought. We put them in green salads and pasta salads all winter.

I still have a couple of pinky-red small sickly things on the counter , ripening.
