View Full Version : FINALLY! I have a job! Rejoice with me!
I have been out of the corporate workforce since Thanksgiving of 2007. I did a year plus of self employment, and decided it really wasn't where my talents are, then have been looking for full time work ever since. I've had 2 contract jobs of 3 months each, one of which was as a volunteer to get experience in a slightly different role (which is the role I've just been hired for, so the investment was worthwhile).
Its for a Fortune 50 company, reasonable pay and excellent benefits, like a 5% 401K match. The commute will be an hour (the only real downside) but I expect to drive at least 45 minutes anyways due to the location that we choose to live in.
I'm a little nervous about jumping back in after 5 years "away" so I've been doing all sorts of things to help me feel more in control, like making some meals ahead and creating checklists and the like for the stuff that needs doing at home (so hubby can chip in more). I already have the first week's worth of clothes ironed and hanging in the closet. :laff:
This almost 52 year old is looking forward to being able to contribute again!

Way to go! Congratulations. The volunteer work to get experience was a smart idea.

Congratulations!
Congratulations! And, thanks for another story to share with my clients who still believe that volunteering is stupid and pointless.
Hooray! Here's to a smooth transition.
Congratulations! Hope you can find some ways to make your commute tolerable. My ipod has been the best investment I made since starting my job in 2008 (I have a 1 hour+ bus commute most mornings).

I have satellite radio as well as an itouch for the commute. I've actually done longer commutes than this one will be, so I know it is do able. Just tiring.

Hooray! It really was lousy you were out of employment for so long, but hey that's all past. Maybe if you're lucky this can be the job you keep until your free for good, right? I'm also commuting near an hour each way, and I don't even do anything to make it pleasant because that would cost money, I just put up with it, listen to free radio.

Congratulations! I finally got my full time job at the age of 54, so I can completely relate, LOL.
I found it took about 9 months to adjust back to the swing of things so don't freak out if you feel a bit overwhelmed at first--and maybe I was a slow adjuster!
Congratulations, Herbgeek! So happy for you!!!

That's great...congratulations! Sounds like you are organized and planning ahead. I like to take the train so that I can knit. Books on CD are great for the car, too.

This is good news, herbgeek.
One of my great-grandfathers worked as a carpenter until he was 92 (when he fell off a roof, and never got up.) It was said of "Jonesy" that what he lacked in speed, he more than made up for in craft.
Good luck in your new endeavors.
So happy for you Herbgeek! Contrats!!

I start Monday, so I don't have an update yet. :)
A bit late perhaps, but congratulations!
DH found a job at the age of 55 after being out of work over two years, exactly 27 months to the day he was let go. It was a real relief for him and no doubt it's a relief for you too!
