Someone sent this article to me today. My uncle who has been dead for about 15 years was featured in a USA Today article about the age of the earth (he discovered it) and as an answer to Marco Rubio. It even had a big photo of Uncle Pud (don't ask why we called him that, I don't remember where that name came from.)
I have divided loyalties here! :laff: I consider Rubio to be a sensible young Republican, plus he is cute. But really, Marco, get some brains.

Wow!!!!! So cool, Iris lily! You must be so proud of your uncle's accomplishments!
Very interesting article, too. I think Rubio just had no clue as to the exact number so he fudged wildly.
And what a huge contribution your uncle gave us by lobbying for removal of lead from our everyday lives. Thanks so much for sharing that!
Very, very cool IL. And yea Marco, time to step up to the plate.

I read the article. You have got to be proud of your uncle. He also discovered the dangers of lead. "He led the fight against lead in paint and lead in gasoline in science for decades, and his chief interest was in environmental chemistry," Eiler says. "You can do it, but it's pretty hard to buy leaded gas nowadays."
Politicians are so afraid of science today. All they want is to get one more vote and if that means laying if the know when the earth was created they will and use biblical time frame.
Much better than a Dutch uncle, a funny uncle, a monkey's uncle, or a drunk uncle: a smart one! A worthy relative indeed.

Well, he was pretty odd, especially later in his life. He had a wonderful smart, sweet wife who kept him grounded and he gave her credit for that. She was a scientists as well.
I remember a scene from when I was about 10 years old: him standing in our kitchen, lecturing my mother about giving my infant brother any milk out of a can that "looks like this" (and he showed her lead soldering.)

Kudos to your uncle, Iris Lily! I think knowing the approximate age of the earth is interesting, but knowing about lead has been lifesaving! I have taken care of children being treated for lead poisoning, and the treatment sure isn't fun! An ounce of prevention is truly worth a poud of cure!
My dsil's sisters will continue to argue that the earth is 6,000 years old. I have about given up all hope for them.
Uncle Pud's message seems to have sunk in...
