In the thread about a vet visit for their dog I mentioned that I might have the need to take my horse, Copper in.... THe lump on his jaw has gone down a bit, The vet had an opening today this morning, but it was in one hour and it takes me an hour and half to get there.. So since he is eating, drinking and pooping and it does not hurt him when I touch it I decided to wait and take him in tomorrow. He is due for his shots and his teeth to be floated too
Snickers is ok she must have just landed funny when she jumped off the couch she is bouncing around with out a hitch

Well, I had a couple of interesting bumps develop and in time, they went away. I did not need a doctor to tell me "well it could be this or it could be that, why dont we wait and see." Observation is a powerful tool and a good animal owner knows when something is not right using their knowledge and observation.

I'm lucky that my equine vet does barn calls! Maybe Copper got a splinter in his jaw and it swelled up. My horse once had an abscess under his jaw that swelled to the size of a golf ball---and no one noticed it! Had to have it opened up and drained.

My vet does do ranch calls but I like to take them there if at all possible ... Since this is just a "routine" call if he get delayed on any of the calls before me it could be hours before he gets there ... One time I had a vet get delayed on many calls and he ended up coming at 10 at night... In that case I normally would have rescheuled but I was going to be leaving for an out of state show in two weeks and needed a health certificate and coggins.. Another time that I had a vet come out the horse needed X-Rays ( this was before digital x ray machines) and the angle was a little off and needed to be re-taken... But if I am at the office and they can develope them right there , if there needs to be re-takes, then they can be re-taken at that time. I schedule the first office appointment of the day before he goes out on his ranch calls
Cooper, it turns out just has a swelling in the lymph area and since the swelling has gone down, they are doing their job... So he got a got a morning cocktail and got a power float and his sheath claned He is not due for annual vaccinations until March

My horse LOVES having his sheath cleaned. Weird. It's always smeggy so I'm lucky he lets me do it a few times a year.

It has been awhile that I have had a gelding The last one I had was filthy and had to be done once a month ( luckliy, he was fine with that) YHis gut I have only had for 1 1/2 years and is a youngster so.. since I am not as spry as I used to be ... I leave that to the vet LOL
There is a two songs about sheath cleaning:
One is sung to the tune of " Hello Mother, Hello Father/ Camp Granada

Warning .... Horse Humor....... The following part of this post you may not get it unless you are horsey lol

How's it hangin'
So much cleaner
Aren't you glad
That I washed your wiener?

I admitt
It was creepy
To stick my arm
Up your pee-pee

It was sticky
It was gunky
It felt icky
It smelled funky

It was cruddy
It was crusty
When you stuck it out , it creaked like it was rusty

After half an
Hour of toiling
And squirting baby oil in,
You're as fresh there
As A Daisy

There is another one that is to the tune of " If You Are Happy And You Know It, Clap Your Hands" I can get to that later .. I have to to run some errands

That's too funny! I'd never wipe off baby's snot but have no problem sticking half my arm up "there". And digging out a bean. Gosh what we do for our animals!

I don't know if it's because my arab is only 14.2 but maybe being short makes it dirtier. It sometimes looks like a flakey pastry. He makes happy faces when he's being cleaned. No wonder I'm single.

Ahhh the interesting world of equine ownership lol
Nature did not mean horses to be kept on small pieces of land, cooped up or in my case in stalls then small turn outs .. The wild/feral horses is survival of the fittest... A horsethat would have "hygiene issues" would have all kinds of urinary issues and would not survive. Mares can have "Hygiene Issues" too I once had a BLM mustang that orginally came from a herd in Sparks, Neveda He did not need to have his sheath clean, shoes on his feet, only trimmed and the farrier , in his 30 years of shoeing horses had never seen feet that tough. He could barely get the nippers to cut through...And sound/ surefooted... that horse never, ever took one mistep
I wil have to say that he was the most "interesting" looking horse I had ever seen... He looked like he was made from spare parts that God had left over when he got through making all of the other horses

Thanks boss mare. I keep forgetting about the survival of the fittest, etc. and how we've changed it.

Some horses will let you squirt the hose "up there" to rinse out the soap!

We did this at an adult horse camp once and I thought the one guy there was going to faint. He had to walk away.

And you all thought that horse ownership was so glamorous.

I didn't know what it was at first, when I first read this post. I googled it and it had a You Tube video about a guy doing it. He was using a hose too, and his bare hands to pull stuff out. I hope he washed his hands afterwards. :~)
Shouldn't it naturally clean itself out when it comes out to pee? :|(

No... It is the horsey comparison to an uncircumsced male ... LOL

I also went to YouTube! I learned something! My dad has mini horses, I wonder if he knows to do this? He only has one male now.

LOL Alot of men can be wimps lol >8)

Yeah and some people think that just because you have horses, you have money... I once had a bumper sticker that said " I used to have money... Now I have horses"

I was just wondering after thinking about this that if baby male horses should be circumcised to avoid all this cleaning! :0!
Although it might be more difficult than with baby human males. :~)
