So I really need to know what a certain position pays.

The situation is that my school (ECE-8th grade) will be changing to stop at 5th grade next year. They may gradually change or suddenly switch all the upper grades. I create and manage after school programs and a chunk of what I do is try to keep middle schoolers in activities. This throws a monkey wrench in my plans to build up programs over a few years.

So my superrvisor already said there are other middle schools that may need someone to run their after school programming. I attend a Spanish class at one of those. However these programs run until 8 pm most every night of the week. So I would have daytimes off and work after my son is home, and basically not see my family. I did that for 5 years while I worked 2 jobs, I am not excited about this option and certainly not for the same pay. A significant increase may be worth considering. Otherwise I need to in the next couple of months tell my organization that I am looking at switching over to the other programs that only provide childcare until 6 pm to keep the same schedule if I am going to earn the same anyway. We typically start considering the next year around March/April but they are bringing up the issue now. Of course it is widely accepted that we do not talk about family needs even in an organization that cares for children.

Since they brought up the issue is it fair to ask what the pay would be or simply say that as much as I love this age of kids I need to work the hours I have been?

"Could you tell me the salary range for this position?"

If you are being considered seriously, it's a fair question to ask. It does assume the benefits are similar or identical; if they are different, you should be told that, too. The final salary you are offered will depend on how much information they have about your current salary, how much they want you to fill this position, the established salary range, what they think you'll accept, and your negotiating skills.

Oh duh, I am feeling rather dumb not realizing I could just ask like that.
