View Full Version : Three things that made me happy today
Nothing tremendous but little thing:
I love getting text messages from my husband and daughter during the day. It makes me feel loved and close to them.
We have some Eastern Phoebes and they make such a pleasant peeping song.
I love Subway sandwiches turkey breast on wheat bread, mustard, no cheese, spinach instead of lettuce, and all the veggies except no jalapeņos.
How about you? What has made you happy today?
1...Sitting on the two seater glider with my husband and watching the sunset.
2...Sleeping in until I was ready to get up for the day,
3...A free piece of bluberry pie with my dinner at the local restaurant!
Three things that made me happy today.
I managed to score this Italian spada di banda for my daughter for Christmas, they are a bit tricky to come by:

Weighs 1 pound 14 ounces, 31" of blade, just the thing for a young lady about to start dating...
Well, reading your happy things.
Today, what.
I was finally able to make it to the laundromat, did half of the stuff and had a nice conversation with someone else there. I think that being able to sit and do nothing or have a nice conversation with a stranger are two of my favorite things, and I had them both today.
This one was last night. My upstairs neighbor is pretty much of a terror. She does not like the people in the back flat, our landlord, the parking spaces and she is not particularly fond of me, either. However, I take every opportunity to talk to her. Part of it is pathological, this need I have to be liked, but she is an interesting person and I come into contact with her department with the city on occasion via my work, although not her specifically. She is never going to want to come in and have tea or a glass of wine, but at least she talks to me now. That is a very small and very happy thing of mine.
Another is that I am relaxing at the end of a very stressful day. Microwave popcorn. Glass of wine. Cat sleeping beside me.
Now, however, I want a Subway sandwich. Roast beef, all the veggies...including lots of jalapeņos, on that grainy bread, nothing else. Man.
I baked some bread this morning and the whole house smelled wonderful for the longest time.
I finished making our Christmas postcards and just need to get them in the mail.
And it rained this evening, just a few minutes, but it was glorious!

Today's three things:
- I had lunch with friends of mine and we enjoyed lots of laughs.
- I ordered a new battery for my cell phone today. The current battery doesn't last a day anymore; that does not make me happy.
- Nice dinner tonight: a dry-fried shredded beef stirfry. Very tasty and plenty for leftovers.

Finding out that the fire in RMNP didn't burn any houses last night despite very strong winds made me happy.
My work went pretty smoothly and someone brought a yummy carrot cake.
It was well above freezing this morning for the dog walk, and the sunrise was really pretty.
Oh.. what a warm and fuzzy thread this is! Thanks for starting it, Florence!
I awoke to another day of good health.
My family awoke to another day of good health.
A roof over our heads, food and drink in our tummies, what more can we ask for...
SteveinMN. That looks, mmm, mmm, good!
-the great appreciation my senior citizen clients show me when I'm done cleaning for them
-a cheery phone call from my daughter
-setting up the christmas tree

1. Getting the house decorated for Christmas today despite my very painful spinal disease that is keeping me in a wheelchair most days lately. I had worried about not being able to do it. While I did much less than other years, I really felt like I had accomplished something. A good feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. DH helped me out so much too and gave me lots of compliments on it all when I was done. He's such a sweetheart! :)
2. A nice phone conversation with my oldest DD who lives in another state. We talked about Christmas plans and how much we were looking forward to seeing each other.
3. At the end of the day cuddling up with my very warm and soft Pug. He is the most wonderful little guy and smells so good since he had a bath recently. He is very comforting to me when I am in pain.
I got up early this morning to finish the review of a manuscript for an academic journal -- I'd been procrastinating on that waaaay too long (past the deadline, which was embarassing) so was glad to get it done. I also cleaned out my "household information management center" drawer, which was filled to overflowing. And I paid a bunch of bills and got a bunch of other errands done yesterday, so feeling on top of things again. I always get really stressed when clutter piles up, both physically and mentally, so feels good to have a more or less clean slate at home.
At work, I got a computer virus yesterday that made it almost impossible to use my computer, so while I waited for our tech consultants to come and fix it I finally got caught up with my filing which had literally been piling up for months. I dealt with about 3 cubic feet of paper, and set up a new file drawer next to my desk for the key files I refer to more frequently. I had been keeping those in file sorter things on my desk, but there was too much material and it wasn't easy to keep organized. Now the spaces on my desk will be just for my most active files, with reference files for administrative stuff and the current program cycles in the drawer to the side. Historic reference files get moved to my file cabinets, where they are out of the way but still accessible if I need them. Much better system and I feel very happy about that!
Boss asked me to take a visiting colleague to lunch on the office, so the lunch I packed today gets saved for tomorrow.
Busy but productive day, which always makes me happy! Now to enjoy the evening with the kids...

I really like this thread! Especially this time of the year.
1. A conversation with one of my very few close friends.
2. Oranges on the tree outside are ready and are very plump and sweet this year.
3. Looking back on my vacation and time I had alone exploring a new city and spending time in new museums.
Rob
Looking back at yesterday...
Looking out at the campus from my new private office with a huge window on the third floor
Watching my two Siamese frolic in the back yard rolling in the dirt and scratching their claws on real trees (indoor cats who get supervised outdoor outings once a day)
Finding that the squirrels had not dug up my newly planted winter garden (after spending a few hours covering it with bird netting and other devices to keep them out)
A good, quiet morning to myself, sitting in the sun (indoors) and working
Going to meet my little puppy's brother at the store where his owner works, and the ensuing joyful reunion/wrestling match that tired him out so wonderfully (I live for a tired puppy so I can get some work done)
An evening community meditation/potluck at a friend's house, eight good souls sitting in meditation together then eating wonderful food
And many other tiny things
I wish someone would ask me this at the end of every day, so I can better remember how good my life truly is.
Yesterday was great for me!
- got an exam for work out of the way, and I think I passed and actually like exams
- new software at work - got to use my brain more than usual, which makes work more fun
- didn't feel horribly ill for the first day in about 9 days of fighting 2 different viruses - yay for health!
Oh how I have enjoyed reading everyone's responses. So that is the first thing that has made me happy today.
It was very foggy this morning and I love the mysterious light shining through the fog. I took the camera and took some photos of the dew jeweled spider webs.
Folding clothes warm out of the drier. The heat feels so good on my old stiff fingers.

Firstly, I think I want to head to Subway tonight for a sandwich-yum!! Rare treat for me. Make mine a veggie and cheese on whole wheat
3 Things that made me happy
I got a few little jobs done at work-feels good to get them off my plate
Walking my boys to school today. It was so warm and we talked about all the fun things coming up!
I had enough time this morning to do my hair-a rare occurrence! And to drink my coffee while in a sitting position

Looking at my Christmas cakes, puddings and black buns, all lined up in the pantry, after I 'fed' them all with brandy!
Coming home at 4.00 pm to find that my husband had turned on the advent arches in all the windows - so welcoming in the gloom.
Finished updating my Christmas card labels - and have managed to prune them from over 100 to a more manageable (and cheaper postage costs) 60 plus. Now, if I can get myself motivated, I'll spend tomorrow morning writing the cards, then sticking on those labels and get them to the Post Office in order that my overseas cards are posted well within the deadline. Many years, I'm at least a week late!
I had a VERY pleasant day working when my nosy, noisy, chattering, annoying volunteer could not come in. Whew! Makes such a difference. (That's almost worth 3 things right there).
SO made dinner while I did some writing. He's helping me make time to do that.
Texted with my crazy daughter whom I'm going to visit in TX tomorrow for 6 days!!!!

- Putting my daughter to bed and she says "Now I need to fluff my pillow". She stands up on bed gets a running start from the end and jumps up and down on her pillow. I could have died laughing.
- First year to actually follow through with my dream of doing nightly family Advent devotional
- Sunny warm temps for Dec, a welcome treat

Putting my daughter to bed and she says "Now I need to fluff my pillow". She stands up on bed gets a running start from the end and jumps up and down on her pillow. So cute! How I miss having little (little) ones in the house. Never a dull moment...
I wish someone would ask me this at the end of every day, so I can better remember how good my life truly is.
Good idea! I'm thinking I might put the number 3 on a piece of paper and leave it on my nightstand so I'm prompted to remember.
I wish someone would ask me this at the end of every day, so I can better remember how good my life truly is.
I need to keep this in mind, too. I like the idea of a "1-sentence/day" journal. That might be something I could keep up with. My journaling of the last 15 years runs to the "5 pages at a time, but only twice yearly" variety.
Today, a couple of little things that made me happy...
Making a pile of baking mixes for my mother-in-law and my aunt, both of whom appreciate home-baked goods but never make them, and rarely have all the ingredients. I carefully selected recipes so that I could mix the maximum possible and leave regular fridge items for them to add.
Sunshine. So nice after many days of clouds.
A package from my parents - not so much the contents as the thought and love that went into the preparation.
Good idea! I'm thinking I might put the number 3 on a piece of paper and leave it on my nightstand so I'm prompted to remember.
Steve, that's such a great idea. Hope you don't mind if I steal.
My husband is out of town this week and because I am housebound due to chronic illness and live way out in the country, it is quite lonely and easy to give into discontent.....this thread is a great way to change my focus
I am thankful for:
~windows with a view of our 60 acres full of goats, cats, woods, fields and sky.
~a Kindle full of interesting things to read.
~a DVR full of interesting things to watch.
~the internet providing information and contact with others.
~ warmer temperatures this week so I don't have to mess with a fire while DH is gone (our only source of heat here)
... just the thing for a young lady about to start dating...
Oh, yeah!
Steve, that's such a great idea. Hope you don't mind if I steal.
puglogic, steal away! :)
Today's three things:
- A nice comfy couch that made for a nice comfy nap;
- I decluttered about half-a-dozen thermal mugs which made their storage area a mess and were totally redundant. Too bad they had to take out a wine glass before I thinned the herd...;
- Turkey for dinner (we didn't have any for Thanksgiving, so it was overdue)

What a great thread...(1) grocery shopping today - having the ability to buy food and also noticing that many people seemed to be cheery today-maybe the beginning of the holiday season joy without the burnout yet (2) a nice phone call from my grown son who lives 5 hours away - talked about his visit home with his SO (3) having the ability to reach out on the internet to other like minded folks while sitting in my jammies in front of the woodstove : )
Hmm, good reminder
* My teacher for one of my after school classes was sick and I was able to tell her with confidence to take her time to get wll and I got to teach 4th graders to make boomerangs
* I had guts and talked to my supervisor about an issue, we still really don't understand each other but it didn't create more issues
* Mykids had dinner waiting when I got home! I thought I would have to stop at the store, get the rest of everything and maybe cook. So now I am sitting in PJ's getting ready to read
1--One of my students laughed pretty much hysterically at something I said. I asked "what, is it my delivery?" She said "yes" continuing to laugh.
2--Happy to see that when I forgot to put the baby lock on the cabinet where the trash can resides that when darling doggie pulled the trash out, she DIDN'T spill coffee grounds all over the floor.
3--I took my 3rd run tonight with DD (of trash can fame) and it was so much better than both runs #1 & 2. So amazing how quickly one gets better @ running especially in the first few weeks.
Three things that made me happy today:
Had my coffee and toast this morning while sitting in my big comfy chair in front of T.V. and knitting before going off to work.
Checking off items on my to-do list at work. Love when I can do this.
Came home after work and realized how much I truly love my home - my sanctuary.
Someone wrote me a bad check at work several months ago. He swore he would make it right and I trusted him even though I know he has a shady past. I never saw any money, had written it off, and considered myself to be a fool to be so trusting. He walked into the restaurant on Monday and handed me some money. Only about a tenth of what he owes but that's ok. If I never see another dime, at least he tried to do the right thing.
We had our 6 month health inspection. Our inspector is great-an educator not a tyrannt. She informed me of several options for produce including growing our own. She's going to find out how much actual safe land we have to use and get back to me. I've been wanting to garden more but didn't think we have the space and didn't want her thinking we were using it for the restaurant.
Dh called his best friend, who he hasn't seen in about 13 years, and made arrangements to meet over our Christmas trip to Chicago. I loved hearing the excitement and happiness is his voice.
My goofy husband who makes me smile even when I am grumpy in the mornings.
Making decorations for christmas.
My two cats wrestling, jumping, and rolling all over the place as they play in the mornings....very funny to watch them.
Wrapping little gifts this morning.
Snuggling with the little dogs in bed before having to get to work.
Taking a short walk in the brisk morning air, what a friend calls a "gratitude walk" where you meditate on the things you are thankful for in life.

I slept all night without waking up once - rare and precious!
Had a professor come and tell me that his students loved my workshop.
My dog learned how to use the dog door (the impact this will have on my life can not be overstated!)
Clorox wipes were in the car so that after our walk where DD had rolled in poop, I had something to clean her off with.
7th period was test day followed by making a map. I didn't have to teach!
SLF! I really am loving reading and posting in this forum lately!
Friends came over for lunch and we had great conversation and food.
Hot soup for lunch and hot stew for dinner.
Reading a new book with DD.
Went to a free happy hour networking event on the large open patio of a beautiful hotel in 75 degree weather tonight.
Had a delicioso holiday caramel brulee Starbucks drink for a p.m. pick-me-up.
Laughed with some co-workers over some YouTube videos (safe for work) that we had seen this week.
1. I had an unexpected call from a friend I had not talked with in a long time.
2. Decluttered all the CD's left from before we switched to digital music---it feels so much lighter!
3. Enjoyed a dish of Haagen-Daz ice cream (half chocolate/half strawberry) It was creamy, sweet and delicious.
12/5/12
We got 2 inches of rain yesterday. I opened the back door just to hear the beautiful sound.
All the lovely birthday wishes I received from family & friends.
My sweet husband had a work from home day.
12/5/12
Got out all of my Christmas CD's and listened to music while cleaning my kitchen.
Finished knitting the last of hand towels I'm giving at a gift exchange.
Saw two of my grandchildren as they bounced into my office.
A good night's sleep last night.
The smell of mulch. JMM brought home a load of mulch yesterday but didn't have time to unload it so he left it in the closed garage over night. Love the smell of mulch.
Bacon sandwiches. (Ever notice how many of the things that make me happy have to do with food??)
My beautiful new entry door with prism-like window panels was installed today.
Had lunch and did a little thrift store shopping with my son and his gf. (he found a beautiful tuxedo for $15)
Enjoyed a perfect day of weather in high 70s.
Gorgeous day with a light mist and no wind so had a lovely long walk with the dog this morning under my bright red umbrella.
Enjoyed a wonderful HD simulcast production of Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera this afternoon.
DH had made a delicious soup with all kinds of veggies and ground beef this morning which simmered on low all day and ready for supper when I got home after the opera.
A hot mug of rooibos chai and a cat on my lap in the lavender early morning, watching the snow fall outside. Beautiful snow-covered trees.
Rosemary, that was such a poetic way to word things, thanks for that.
Hanging photos on our walls for the first time (our walls have been mostly bare for months)
Having an impromptu holiday gathering with friends and their kids, and having time to just sit and chat away from the hustle and bustle.
Hearing from my little brother via email, and catching up a little on what's going on in his life (he lives 1000 miles away and is hard to keep in contact with)
Not working today
Cool holiday stuff to make
No sweets in the house to tempt me

Listened to a couple of Kate Rusby Christmas CDs whilst I baked mince-pies to put in the freezer ready for the anticipated visit of the two groups of carol singers over the next couple of weeks. One of the groups is about 30-strong, so that's a lot of mince pies, mulled wine and apple juice!
The resurrection of some old technology of mine that had been in storage for years: listened to long-forgotten Handel's Messiah CDs on a long-forgotten CD player, run through the speakers of a long-forgotten portable stereo.
10 cm of new powdery snow.
Coffee with crossword puzzle.
★ Three things that made me happy today★
A lovely lunch with my dearest husband, daughter and soon to be son-in-law.
A Sunday afternoon nap
I finished reading The Forest Unseen: A Year's Watching in Nature by David Haskell. Reading the words was like pouring soothing oil on my naturalist's soul. Lovely.

Eleven months tobacco-free anniversary yesterday and today starts month 12. Starting to feel like the norm.
Got to take a nice walk in the woods with DH today.
Walked a trail he discovered last week that I had never been on. When we got to a part that was wide and straight, he said, "Let me hold your hand. When I walked this the other day, I pictured us holding hands here when I walked it with you."

Today was the first day in about a month and a half that I haven't had to go to work with an upset/nervous stomach (an employee who had been causing problems since April resigned on Friday). I feel so good!

My three happy things are:
We moved into our new home this past weekend and I just love it here...
Love my dog SO much
Love my husband SO much, he made the whole move happen, from working extra to save for a down payment to packing etc. he didn't want me to be stressed out since I have health issues. He did so much....
Finding a good dog walker to take Gordon on hikes, for those days when I am chained to the office but he really needs some serious exercise.
Having good espresso in the house, finally.
Having time to write this morning after many mornings in a row of feeling too rushed.
Incredibly beauty outside today, brilliant sparkling snow and a clear blue sky.
Lunch with friends.
Shoveling snow with DH and all the neighbors. It feels like such a community effort when everyone is outside shoveling at the same time.

Today's three:
- I'm happy I live in a real neighborhood. Not a collection of McMansions where you never see your neighbors for the garage-door openers and privacy fences. A neighborhood where people know each others' names and which house is theirs and what they do. Neighbors who help each other out and don't think twice about running the snowblower down the sidewalk in front of your house after theirs because, well, they're right there anyway and it's good for everybody to have clear sidewalks.
- I'm happy we were able to drive around today without incident. Some of the roads are surprisingly good; some are shockingly bad. We survived them all without a scratch. Our cars may have to be put on a low-sodium diet, however. lol
- I am happy that I am married to a real partner and my best friend. (That wasn't the case the first time around.)
Got two orders mailed on time. Yay me!
Changed the sheets. Yay clean sheets!
Gorgeous 55+ weather. Yay Mother Nature!

Dentist appointment today! OK, I have to explain that going to the dentist has never, ever made me happy before. But a friend recently told me about a new/different kind of bite guard that her dentist prescribed, that has really helped with her chronic jaw clenching and migraines, and I am actually excited to talk to my dentist about it.
Ongoing happiness about work being nearly stress-free now.
Seeing my dogs cuddling on the couch never fails to make me smile. And during the winter, it happens daily. Hooray for winter!
Kara
I walked the dog in bright sunshine this morning. I have one spot on the walk that is sheltered and when the sun shines there in the morning, I feel as though I am in a sunroom.
Got my hair cut properly today by the new hairdresser that I found.
Went to my favourite garden centre and found a sturdy clay pot for my new amarylis that was 50% off and used some of my coupons as well.
★ Three things that made me happy today★
The housecleaners came today. It is so nice to have a clean house while spending the day quilting and reading.
Seeing how happy my cats are on the warm electric blanket. I only know they are alive because they change positions every couple of hours.
Listening to beautiful music--Mozart's Clarinet Concerto--while quilting.
★ Three things that made me happy today★
I didn't sleep well last night so I took an after breakfast nap. Ah, the joys of retirement. Eat your heart out, worker bees! LOL!!
Beautiful day. Clear, cool, low humidity.
No cooking day. Took 2 containers of veggie soup out of the freezer and toasted some sourdough bread.

Christmas packages are on their way, and I had only a brief wait at the PO.
Forecast high winds never materialized.

Bathing the puppy in the kitchen sink. Seeing him all sudsy, and carrying him around wrapped in a towel, was precious.
Going for tea and cookies with my yoga group after class. So civilized and ladylike, despite the fact we were all sweaty.
A Christmas Skype call with my favorite client/friends, who I think are some of the kindest people on earth.
"Bathing the puppy in the kitchen sink. Seeing him all sudsy, and carrying him around wrapped in a towel, was precious"
A sweet soapy, wriggly puppy love! Nothing like it! (Totally different vibes when bathing a cat...)
* DD's orchestra concert downtown. Saw lots of parents I knew, had fun chaperoning the kids. Amazing how good they sound - they're elementary schoolers!
* Spotting a deer walking in the woods in the early, dim morning. It was perfectly camouflaged aside from the motion, amongst the brown tree trunks, in the snowy woods - beautiful.
* Having the furnace fixed.
