View Full Version : Aleppo pepper seeds
If anyone happens to see, in their garden catalog porn that shows up in the next month or two, seeds for Aleppo or Halaby pepper, I would dearly appreciate knowing about it. I've gotten downright addicted to these peppers (dried) and would pay a pretty penny for an envelope of seeds to grow my own.....but have had zero luck on the Web.
For those who haven't used it yet in their cooking, crushed Aleppo pepper is on the mild side of hot, but with a deep, rich flavor somewhere between a mild chipotle pepper and the spice cumin. We put it in everything now....sigh.....

Can you get the peppers dried, but not ground? If so see if the pepper seeds will germinate. If they are naturally dried or dried at a low heat they might be still viable.

The Seed Savers member catalog will have one person offering them to other members under the aleppo name in 2013. They got their seeds from the USDA seed bank in 2012.
Thanks, Amaranth! I wish I could afford a membership right now, but we're struggling a little and I can't justify it. I'll try my source for the spice and see if they have a dried version - great idea!

Seems like they are hard to find, did you try putting up a trade offer for seeds on the Gardenweb forums? It looks like more than a few people are interested in these peppers.

puglogic - I just checked and Penzey's Spices offers crushed dried aleppo.
Thanks, Lin. Yeah, I buy that crushed. Occasionally it will have a seed or two in there, but they haven't been viable (they must dry it at a very high temperature and it sterilizes them) Delicious, though!
Have you tried to find Maras or Antep? They are also the kind of peppers that expand and meld out the flavors instead of just being hot for the sake of being hot. I like them equally, although I have to admit that I have never had all three of them around at the same time.
I think that another reason the seeds you are finding in the crushed pepper cannot be viable because of the teeny amounts of oil and/or salt that are often added to these kinds of seeds.
