I don't want to make light of the very real pain of people in HSSJs, but it could be worse -- imagine working for this guy:

The one thing he left out was the lovely ball and chain that comes as part of the benefits package. And the fact that you have to keep it shined to a glossy black at all times. No smudges, please, we're perfectionists!

“I’m sure their ideal candidate — a cowed, brainless robot with no opinions, ambitions, or life outside of the office — will bring a lot to the table.” And a noted editor-author translated the listing as “Wanted: Ivy-educated, masochistic, lobotomized friendless orphan prostitutes willing to be locked inside a sweatshop.” (from the article)

One of my all-time favorite quotes is from professional hockey goalie Jacques Plante, who said:

You think your job is bad? How would you like a job where every time you make a mistake, a red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?

Not to minimize the downside of working with this O'Brien character. But it was helpful to me at some times when I imagined a mistake of mine was far more important than it turned out.

I got through most of my work life reminding myself "If my father could survive jungle warfare..." Puts things in some perspective, though he wasn't at it for thirty-some years.

I read the job posting on facebook and at first I thought it was something out of The Onion...unbelievable.

I am seeing this as incentive for the masses to find a niche and strike it out on their own - for reasons of physical, emotional, and spiritual health. I also see this as more incentive to take the time before I make a purchase to do some research to at least try to not spend money supporting a company that treats its workers this way.....though i don't know this can be realistically done 100% of the time. That is the positive I take from this. As to the negative.....do you have all afternoon? LOL. Seriously, I am thinking more and more and more I was meant to be self employed. Rob PS Wanted to add perhaps another reason for an attempt at self employment would be mental health, too.....

LOL! I'm guilty of a number of these, including gossping, surfing the net, and giving unsolicited advice about how to run things.

What surprises me is that any of these things are considered deal-breakers by this employer. Get real! I've never worked for a company that didn't have most of this stuff going on. Incompetence, thoughtlessness, being on auto-pilot, and the habit of just doing the bare minimum of your job, all describe most employees I've seen. But that's not necessarily their fault. Many people find work dehumanizing, and a lot of them are treated unfairly on the job. It creates a passive-aggressive lash-out phenom that is so, so common.

The other thing - employers shouldn't try to keep their people from socializing. Study after study has shown that people perform better when they can interact with those they work with, socialize a bit, take breaks without being timed, etc.
