I have been given two bottles of vanilla from the Caribbean islands. The giftees meant well by bringing these gifts back from their trip. I don't like the taste but am not sure how to dispose without causing problems. Will they affect my septic system? Will it harm the soil? Has anyone found a proper disposal method?
Suggestion - don't being it back unless you are going to use it yourself.

Rather than try to dispose of, I would offer it up to friends (not the friends who gifted it) to use. I'm sure you can find someone who likes to bake with vanilla extract.

I've never heard of it harming anything, but if you are concerned, can you cook off the alcohol and then dispose?

Think the alcohol in any form will not be good for the septic tank.

We are new owners and have septic for the first time I use mouthwash to sanitize my toothbrush since there is alcohol in it, I read yesterday that it is bad for the septic. Some of your friends would be glad to have this...

Good idea. Once the alcohol is gone, the taste will improve. If you like the odor of it, you can always use it to simmer on your stove & sweeten your house!

Take the cap off and sit it on the counter until it evaporates. But I don't think that little bit of alcohol would hurt the septic tank.

I had some Mexican vanilla a few years ago that I didn't like the taste of so I put it in my homemade soap along with some almond extract. It made a nice scent.

Pour it out in an odd corner outside, away from your septic tank?

I would agree. It will just evaporate. BTW, how much liquid are we talking about?

About 2 pints. I have generous friends with such things. Actually, I think that they got such good deals that they bought extra to share.

I'd try to re-gift it first. Better to have it used than thrown out. I don't know if a food pantry or soup kitchen would take it, but that's worth a shot, too.

If that's not a possibility, dilute it with water a bit, and sprinkle it around outside.

Could you use it as a good smelling kitchen counter top disinfectant?

Yes, I was thinking of using for cleaning too. If there's no sugar in it, you can use it on windows, tile, stainless, etc.

Never thought of using it elsewhere so will try using some of it that way. Thanks for all the ideas.
