I grew Indigo rose tomatoes this summer. While the tomatoes were beautiful they never really ripened to the point where they tasted good. They were supposed to turn red inside and never did. It was very disappointing because they looked so great. Like shiny purple marbles.

I was giving consideration to the purple tomato, now I will think longer about it. I tried a heirloom tomato a few years ago, husband could not eat it as he had a hard time getting over the color. I am excited to view the catalogs arriving in my inbox. SO will update soon.

Were the indigo rose too sour like the sugars hadn't developed or was the flavor itself bad?

No, they weren't sour....the flavor never developed. The info we got with the seeds said the flesh should be fully red but ours never got red, only pink. We left them on the vine to ripen which they never did. They finally started shriveling and we pulled the plants and tossed them in the compost.

This year I'm not planning on trying anything new, just going heavy with the things that I know do well here, or that I already have seeds for.

Primarily tomatoes (early girl), Kabocha squash..lots and lots of them, Numex chilies, and the usual zucchini, cukes, lettuce, kale, and romano beans. Last year I grew almost all of my beans in 5 gallon pots, and that worked out great. They were bush beans.

I saved a bunch of seed from our CSA share and also my own garden last year, so mostly going to grow that. What I will not do, is plant 30 tomato plants in a space more appropriate for like 12. I may need to chant "more is not better" this spring! Oh, and give some away. The green bean idea is a good one though! We have a half barrel in the yard that's basically feral right now so if I can hook it to the watering system that might work. What I would like to plant are a couple peach trees and some plums (plums are feral or native here so do well). Possibly another current bush or 4...a bit of a pain to harvest but the jam is easy to make and very tasty. Not sure whether to give raspberries another whirl. My parents had a great big huge patch in the yard of the house I grew up in, but they have since moved and didn't take a cutting. Neither of us has been able to get good ones to grow, though I see them all over in the mountains-both in sunny, hot locations and in shadier higher elevations.
