View Full Version : Oh, the weather outside is frightful!

and yes you are all so delightful too :-)!

Well a storm has caused me to cancel my ski trip to the Sierras this last week - and another one is coming in tomorrow until Christmas - so I will be staying here in sunny (but cold and frosty) SoCal for the holidays instead. I see that the storm that passed here this week is now hammering the mid west and south and that many flights are cancelled. So is this frightful weather messing up your holiday plans? Are those of you who are flying for the holidays just going to cancel and stay home all warm and snuggly in your beds or will you brave the elements and hope you aren't stranded at an airport (or bus or train station or on some snowed in highway)? Of course that's assuming that the world doesn't end tomorrow as predicted :-)!

It's been non-stop rain here for a few days. OK with me.

Cold, cold, cold here in the Bay Area (and yes, I know cold is relative). I am having to scrape ice off the car in the mornings before work. It's in the 28-30 degree range outside when I get up. The house is 62 right now. The dogs need to wear pajamas to bed in this weather. But, cold like this comes with gorgeous clear blue skies and lots of sunshine, so it's a lovely shade of winter.

And no, our holiday plans don't need to change, since we aren't going anywhere. However, two years ago (I think it was) we had to stay an extra (grumpy!) day in SoCal due to snow on the Grapevine. Glad that doesn't happen every year. When I am ready to leave LaLa land (and my family), I am ready to leave.

I'm still going to Carmel. I guess I better check the roads, but I don't think they will be affected. Sorry you had to cancel your ski trip, but I'm sure you'll get back up to the mountains soon.

Well it was more my sister - that sun bunny of the south - who can't stand skiing in cold or stormy weather so she's flying off to Hawaii instead (I hope she gets a nasty sunburn :-)!!). I don't like to ski in stormy or windy weather and it was both earlier this week. But yesterday and today are exactly like Treehugger described - perfect winter weather! But it won't last long - at least not in the mountains - and I'm free to go anytime I want so why go when it's terrible out. Plus it's nice to stay home in the new digs while everyone else is hussling and bussling about.

Just a warning - I think the Grapevine might be closed just before Christmas if this up coming storm (Sat to Monday) is as cold and snowy as they say it will be. But 101 will be open and is a much nicer drive from the Bay area anyways.

Thanks for the warning, but we aren't going down until the 29th, so we will miss this storm (doesn't mean there won't be another one). We will be sure to check the weather before we leave. 101 is a much nicer drive than 5, that's true. But, it's also a lot longer travel time. Since we want to maximize our visit to time off ratio, we prefer the quicker (uglier!) route.

Here in Nebraska we had our blizzard yesterday and last night. Only 6" or so of snow here, but hard to tell because 60 mph wind piled it up in some pretty crazy places. Clear, windy and cold today. I need palm trees...

We here in the Twin Cities missed it. This time. But it is windy and gray again today. That's when I really love seeing all those Christmas lights.

Yeah, I need my fleece on for about an hour before 7am over my light sleeveless top. Then the sun burns off the clouds and it gets warm to hot. Geeze, the roads were even wet this morning from some sprinkles. This darned winter weather...

Ok, trying to make the most of what good there is to being down here in Honduras...

Well, just got completely shoveled out from over 20 inches of snow and 40 mph winds... major drifting. I am SOOOOO thankful we were not without power as so many in our area were!

Wow, frugal-one! 20" of snow would even be a headline up here! Glad you got out of it with only sore muscles.

I wish it would snow 20 inches here!!! It did in some of the mountains so that was good. Down at "low" altitude we got maybe 2-3 inches which was very welcome and we had wished for more. But it didn't do much to cancel stuff here. Right now it's about 50 and sunny.

Well, the official tally was 21 1/2 inches of snow.... a record! Also, a number of houses in my town were without power for a few days. Thankfully, we had enough of everything. The roads are still dicey.

I just checked the mountain (Sierra) ski reports (where I am suppose to be right now) to see how much snow they got yesterday - and are expected to get today and ... well, lets just say I'm glad I;m not there! 2 feet yesterday and expecting 5 feet today. YIKES! Freein05 (who lives in the Sierra Mountains) must be under a giant snow drift by now :-)!

My brothers are visiting my parents this week in Kings Beach (north lake Tahoe) and the pictures they are emailing are pretty cool. Their cars got buried overnight. Fun to see, but I am glad we aren't there, since then we would be stuck for several extra days.

A few inches of snow here this a.m. The snow not much of issue, but the thick layer of ice underneath not fun.Had to make a several trips out to the car with warm water just to get the door open. Oh well, atleast its nice and toasty warm inside by the fire.

Nothing new here the past few days except for an arctic air mass. Almost noon and the temp is 4*. Yuck.

Four degrees? That's cold.

It's raining here. Has been all day. And I was going to go out today and work on the leaves. Darn!

It's snowing in NOVA but not here.

We live in the sierras about 18 miles from Bear Valley Skie area. We have had almost 2 feet of snow. As I type this it is still snowing.
