I got the latest psychology today and there was an interesting article. It said that our taste (for food) could say something about our personality. So sweet people tended to like a lot of sweet food. It also said that often people who are particular about things like organic food or strict diets can be more judgemental.

I think in many cases this is a stretch since I know many people who eat very carefully and are more open minded. However as I went from very strict and careful eating to a more 'do my best' style I have been nicer about other people. I eat well and am careful ( I have one allergy and that is something I am terribly strict about) however if I am a guest I eat what is offered.

Any thoughts?

By that yardstick, my personality would be "spicy." http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/artists/just_cuz/JC-hysterical.gif

Rigid people are generally to be avoided, however their personality manifests itself.

We actually have a "strict" diet by most people's standards, but I would not consider us judgmental AND we will eat whatever is offered as well as break our diet all the time really (ie, go out for ice cream).

Also, it doesn't feel strict. :)

I think we would be "savory" rather than sweet or spicy. Though, I love spicy. :D

I think that preference for calorie-dense foods (sugars and fats) is pretty universal, as a survival trait, and wouldn't draw any conclusions from that. (Nor from whether or not one likes the taste of cilantro.) But one's approach to food (permissive, restrictive, evangelistic, etc.) could certainly put personality traits on display.

I was mostly thinking of my exhusband to be honest. We were vegetarian for a long time, i was before I met him. However pretty quickly I realized it would not kill me to eat meat if my grandma made it, and I always brought food to events so I didn't stress out the host. He was really picky about it. Then one child could not have dairy, another was allergic to peanuts and I was dealing with feeling like crap so we started eating meat. Immediately he said he never agreed with being vegetarian. It then became about eating whatever more strictly. So he would call in the middle of the day to say he felt he could not eat carrots and i should not get them anymore. One time he said the only way to eat fish was if you bought it at the store the same day you cooked it. His biggest deal was chocolate, no Hershey's. He actually would send me to the store with the percentage of cocoa he wanted in some chocolate (I just didn't buy chocolate).

When we got divorced my food budget was half of his and I had the kids the majority of the time. We ate whatever would keep people full for at least 4 hours and was not junk. We ate junk now and then, knowing it wouldn't kill us. I even drank some alcohol now and then. And we had a lot more friends for it.

I'll have to grab a copy. I have always felt I could tell a lot about a person by their choice of salad dressing and Coke or Pepsi.

hahaha. ok, do tell: Pepsi and Coke, what do they signify? I'm not sure I could tell the different if you put them in glasses for a taste test.

I'm a "mass quantities of food" (in the cone heads voice) kind of person. haha

I love lots of veggies and meat. And I am easily addicted to sugar.
I love Coke Classic, but only allow myself to have it every couple of weeks.
Unfortunately, since I lost alot of my sense of taste, I use alot of salt.
Can't tolerate spicy food.

I was a coke girl for years. but I was finally able to get off the stuff. I haven't had soda in. . . forever. Years, actually. I will have natural fermented soda (which I can make and also buy here). But that's a rare treat. last time I had one of those was over 6 months ago.

I think that people's personality traits can come out in how/what they eat. . . how they relate to food. DH had orthorexic tendencies for years (until we upped the fat and started to heal his GAPS and such). I've always been pretty casual. My diet might have restrictions, but I don't take them as gospel or anything (i've been vegan, vegetarian, general healthy, and now paleo). I'm always subject to change.

I also like to try new things and different cuisines. Since moving here, we've expanded into seafood and a lot of diverse asian mixes. It's really fun and delicious. :) It's not as diverse as australia, but it's still very different than what we knew in the US. I'm no fan of seafood (never have been), but i'm learning about it and getting more acquainted with it and so I'm starting to get some pleasure from it. :)

That's an interesting idea. I love most foods. I just don't care for seafood or Asian. When I worked in Japan I lost a lot of weight! People always assume I'm a vegetarian and don't eat sugar, (because of my body type,) but I eat everything. I just buy organic and good quality now that I can afford it. I used to love MacDonalds but don't eat it anymore. I used to love coke and pepsi, too, but I got off soda. But, if I'm at a party or something, I eat what's served with a smile. Food is a great pleasure!
