He seems to have an excellent nose, and we'll be tracking down lost hikers together in no time at all.
Lovely dog! Love his name!
He's adorable! I'll bet his tail hasn't stopped wagging since being introduced to his new home/family.
His expression says, "make sure you put a couple extra logs into the woodstove before you go to bed, so I can stay cozy and warm through the night".

Oh, what a gorgeous boy! My dad raised Black and Tans waaay back when. I admire them greatly. Congrats on the new addition to your family.

Fun!
What's the energy level of a typical coonhound? Can you expect to be kept very active now, or will he likely be pretty chill, or somewhere in between?
What a handsome boy. Enjoy him.

Somewhere between "active" and "psychotic". My grandfather used to keep a pack, and exercised them on horseback.
I took this fellow for a test jog/run/hike on the mountain for a couple of hours today, and he was definitely faster than I was, but I managed to tire him out eventually. I'm mostly dead now though :-)

Inside the house, he seems to be mellow and lazy, much like my Bassets were. The Bassets also were quite active outside when engaged in Doing Something Useful. This guy has much longer legs, I couldn't possibly have kept up with him a year or so ago.

Oh my!! Sounds like fun and fitness in your future! :D
Sounds like a lot of fun. I'm so glad that he's found a good home! :)
What a sweet looking boy! But I bet he will keep you quite busy.
Crom understands the riddle of steel!

A pictoral definition of "Lucky Dog". Congratualtions on your new addition.
Well done adopting this guy! What I want to know is how do you keep him with you? We adopted a foxhound and if he gets offlead, he is gone to visit other neighbour's dog. We have had him for 5 years and he still wants to be with other dogs. Is the coonhound a dog's dog or a people dog?

He's nice, I always like droop eared dogs.

So far, I've kept him attached to me by a leash at all times. My Basset Hounds could never be let off leash either unless you were in the field hunting, because once they got a scent, off they'd go. This fellow seems to have the same approach to life as well.
I haven't any grand hope that he'll be an off-leash obedience superstar ever :-)
I hope he has a long and happy life. Just what I hope for all companion animals.
Ah, now I can plan a hike in your area and get lost.
Will you fix me dinner too? Maybe something fresh you have brought home. And roasted.

Welcome, Cromwell! You are gorgeous (as you probably already know).
Always happy to hear about rescued pets. Good luck keeping up with him. :) I am personally too lazy to handle such an active breed. I will stick to my couch potato greyhounds.

Lucky dog! He's beautiful! What made you decide to adopt this dog? Had you been thinking about adopting this particular kind of dog?
I LOVE coonhounds, and almost adopted a Plotthound years ago, from the Seattle pound. My very fav hound was a tri-color foxhound named Jezebel. I had a friend in MO who raised coonhounds, foxhounds, & beagles. I hope you make this beautiful guy happy & take hom hunting.

Well, I have had Basset Hounds for the past 20 years or so. This spring my last Basset passed away.
Recently I learned that my county lacked any local search-and-rescue tracking capability, when we spent some time trying to find a friend of my daughter's who had had a bad car accident, stumbled into the woods in search of help, and expired from exposure before we could find her :-(
So I decided I would see what I could do about this, and my Mother, who helps run the local shelter, put the word out to breed rescue agencies and shelters on the mainland. Some tracking wizard on the mainland came across this fellow, and we smuggled him between animal shelters to get him out here :-)
Wow, a teen died on the island from exposure? I hadn't heard about that... I am so sorry. Hounds are the BEST for this! Ad such smart, goofy, adorable beings.

She was in her early 20s, but it was a terrible thing, she was active in all sorts of spheres here, and many folks knew her and miss her :-(

Here's the first photo I've managed that shows how oddly tall my new Basset is - it is an action shot of him tracking down the fireplace:

Looks like a Bassett on stilts!! Good dog has that fireplace cornered!
And he appears to be a good pointer as well :D
Beautiful.

He is beautiful!
Cromwell is shaping up nicely, he's about 115 pounds now, and is responding moderately-well to training, for a huge scent hound.
He's also fine with the other household pets. I only realized taking these shots the other day just how huge our cat is though...

What a gorgeous pair of animals!
Looks like GoldPig has everything working well in his little fiefdom. So long as the cat is working with the dog, then obviously the g-pig's methods for domination are working.
