To our Canadian neighbors: do you make this? do you eat it? It seems to be kind of a "national dish."
For those who've not heard of it it is french fries with cheese curds in top and then ? brown gravy ladled over that.

Wow! Never heard of that before---looks like a cardio attack in a bowl.
SO says he's had it in the upper Midwest.

Poutine has been fast food in Quebec for about a generation.

Kay--You just made me laugh--I was thinking the exact same thing when I looked at the picture b4 scrolling down to your comment!
I haven't heard of anyone making it, though I'm sure it's done. Much easier to just buy poutine, since the fast food restaurant has the deep fryer. Being vegetarian I don't eat it. It depends how health conscious you are - like most fast food, it seems that younger people eat it more, though that's just a generalization.
In my youth, I used to frequent a fast-food joint that featured fries with a side of chicken gravy. They were divine, and I haven't found any as good since. So I'm open to the idea of poutine, but just barely.
This dish is why Canadians have gun control.

This dish is why Canadians have gun control.ROTFLMAO!
Personally, I don't touch the stuff, but every so often (when we make fries at home), we'll douse the fries in ketchup and gravy. Talk about heaven!

Oh yeah! I have a definite weakness for poutine! I make it occasionally and order it out sometimes. I have to maintain control though as I could eat the stuff every day! Definitely a cardio attack in a bowl, KLRZ!
Zach loves poutine. I'm not a big fan. My French Canadian father can't eat it because of stomach issues.
We don't live in Canada, but I've seen it around here quite a few places too, sometimes with the cheese curds deep fried, since deep fried cheese curds are popular around here.

Tried this poutine in Quebec--it was tasty, but a little goes a long way...almost an overload of richness--like eating gravy with a spoon...

I have never had poutine, but I have heard of it. I don't care for gravy (but I would try poutine if it was served to me), but I love cheese curds and and I love french fries. :) The cheese curds from Beecher's (http://www.beechershandmadecheese.com/) are worth the trip to Pike Place (of course, the same could be said of thousands of products sold at that market!)!

Ketchup AND gravy!? Now that's just wrong!
