View Full Version : Way to Bridge One-Month Gap in Child's Health Insurance

To make a long story short, I screwed up in transferring my 21-month-old daughter from my group policy with Kaiser to an individual plan. I naively assumed since I wasn't switching providers - just kinds of plans - that I could make the switch fairly easily. But, as it turns out, her coverage from my group plan ends on January 1, and because I only filled out her application today for an individual plan, the earliest she can now get coverage again is February 1st. In hindsight, this makes sense - I added her to my employer's plan when she was born, but now she has to be "approved."

She doesn't have any major health issues (I'm knocking on wood now that I've typed that), but I still am trying to get her covered through some catastrophic plan for the month of January, but I can't seem to find any emergency health plans. Anthem Blue Cross says they might be able to cover her as of January 10th, but I can't find anything quicker, though it seems like when I was single and childless, I was able to get really fast catastrophic coverage when I needed it. It may be that that's just not doable for a toddler, but I thought I'd ask here if anybody has any experience with this.

Suggestions?

Is it possible to use COBRA for one month, or does that only become available with a job loss/change?

Yeah, I'd just avoid 'germ factories', i.e. day care, mall, really any public place with a lot of kids with snot noses. Unless your daughter has health issues, or is compromised in any way ,(existing issues, chronic diseases) I wouldn't worry. It's only a month. 4 short weeks, more or less.
Is she having problems now? Ear problems? diarrhea? If she is healthy, sleeping and eating well, I'd not worry.
