In two days it will be New Years Day and tradition dictates that I eat black-eyed peas for good luck and prosperity in the coming year. Usually I just heat up a can of them with a little salt and pepper. I think I need to jazz things up a bit. Does anyone have a favorite recipe? I'm thinking of trying one of these:

Whoa, thanks for the reminder! I'll get some tomorrow.
Sorry, no recipes. We just like them hot with lots of butter, salt, and pepper.

Hmmmm, I think it will be a bean soup for me with ham, simply because I don't have black eyed peas and do have the beans.

This is my favorite way to have black-eyed peas:

You can use any greens, and if you don't have aby leftover cooked sweet potato or winter sqwuash on hand, just cook it in the soup.

Are there any other new year foods that have a tradition for good luck in the coming year? I loathe black-eyed peas. :)

DH insists on black-eyed peas every year for good luck. The only way I will eat them is to prepare a bean "salad". Rinse beans, drain, add diced red bell peppers, red onions, celery, carrots, parsley and toss with a vinagrette dressing. Squeeze of lemon juice. Chill.

Blackeyed pea, sweet potato and roasted pepper soup! (Made with olive oil, good hot or cold.)

Black-eyed peas, greens & a cake of cornbread on tap for today.... let the good luck commence! :)

When I get to cooking here in a bit, I'll find my recipe and post ....
I forgot to soak my beans last night so I was going to do the quick boil method first, then cook slowly for the day

Blackeyed Peas are not my favorite either BlackdogLin... but I hate to miss out on good luck, so I struggle through a few days of not my favorite food.
...... no pain, no gain

So I ended up just following the recipe on the back of the Goya Beans bag for Hoppin' John.... did not like the outcome.
I had a feeling I should have just put in half the rice it called for... I wish I would have followed my intuition, it came out much thicker than I like.

Good thing though, I discovered that I actually love the taste of black-eyed peas.

I am so excited for beans & soups season... they are my favorite foods, I'd have them ALL the time if it were just me, myself & I.
