View Full Version : "lucky" New Year's foods

I already have tomorrow's menu planned, then got to thinking about whether it could be considered in any way a "lucky" New Year's Day meal. I can't abide black-eyed peas, which in another thread is what got me thinking about this.

Thank goodness! - my cheesy broccoli soup with ham has PORK in it. Pork is an exceedingly lucky New Year's food. It would be better if I'd planned to have cornbread with it (golden cornbread, you know?), but the homemade bread is already made so will just have to go with the lucky pork. :)

Per my googling, for anyone that's interested, without all the cultural details as to why the food is considered lucky for New Year's: good stuff: long noodles, grapes, greens, legumes, pork, fish, round fruits, and cakes. Bad stuff: no chicken or any fowl, no lobster.

I may have to bake a cake in the morning. :) And next year I may have to start a tradition of pork-n-fish stir-fry w/beans and greens eaten over soba noodles. :)

(and for the record: it's 7:16 on New Year's Eve and I'm just sitting here being content and we have special snackies for later and we're not leaving the house and I'm so boring and life is good.)

My family used to always eat pork with sauerkraut with dumplings. Not a tradition any longer and wouldn't be for me now that I am vegetarian...

My husband and I will be doing the roast pork, sauerkraut and dumplings tomorrow. I'll be thinking of my Mom and Dad as I prepare it. They made a wonderful life for my three sisters and me!:)

We had hungarian saurkraut with smoked sausage, mashed potatoes, and home-made bread. I've eaten saurkrat and some type of pork on new years all of my life. And I've been very lucky!

Does that mean it's bad luck to have chicken or lobster or bad luck not to have them. Went to a party where all the food was round, supposedly good luck.

Round food = good luck. Poultry or lobster = not good luck.
