Including if the person joins AARP?

What useful discounts have you, or someone you know, gotten from being 50?

I use the AARP discount frequently. It has more than paid for itself. Also, our local Fred Meyer (maybe Kroger in your area) offers 10% off most things on the first Tuesday of each month.

Do you remember some of the things you have used the AARP card on?

It looks like I would get a good discount at Pearle Vision.

I just booked hotel rooms and noticed that a discount was offered for AAA and AARP members.

I use VITA through AARP. It's a free income tax service. I'm just under 50, but they still let me, since I qualify, financially. I used to spend $500. a year on my tax accountant, so it really saves me money and stress.

I use it frequently for travel. I recently booked hotels through AARP/Expedia at a non-refundable E-rate. AARP was very nice in helping me get a refund due to my husbands health even though I had purchased at the non-refundable rate. I keep forgetting about using it at stores. I'll have to check into that.

Well I guess there's some bone they throw me to mitigate the trauma of hitting 50. I'm counting the months. Fifteen until D-day.

Life Is Simple, I use the AARP card quite a lot when I travel. Different restaurants offer discounts. Different hotels offer discounts. I'm usually on the road 3 or 4 times a year and every little bit of discount helps make the trip more profitable.

We did book a trip including a rental car through AARP/Expedia site once. The flight and airfare worked out fine but the car rental place tried to charge us again. It was a royal pain and I appreciated AARP's help sorting that out.

bunnys, hitting 50 is not a traumatic thing. Like most other 'created' crises it's just another step on the road. Not much actually changes.

In this area, Kroger has a "Senior Discount" of 5% off your total bill each Tuesday once you're 50. 5% isn't much, but it's better than no discount.

Edited to add: And I don't care what Kroger says; 50 is NOT "senior!"

Hi Martha, I would love that 5% discount if I was using coupons that they also doubled!:)

My coupons never get doubled. I don't often find coupons for the things I buy, so haven't paid enough attention to know if they have a double-coupon day. If they do, I'm going on the wrong day! Since you mentioned it, I'm going to find out. Every little bit does help. Thanks!

Martha you can find coupons you need at a coupon service called:

You will pay a dime for each cut coupon but I find it's very worth it. They have quite a large selection of coupons. If you buy items on sale with your coupon and 5% you should really save! Good luck! Christine

I volunteer every year (since 2001) for the AARP Tax Aid program and just to correct any misconceptions it IS NOT limited to people over 50. We take anyone of any age or income provided that their return falls within our scope of training. For instance: we cannot do (among other things) married filing separately, forgiveness of debt due to bankruptcy or anything with depreciation. But there are no restrictions based on age or income. Stop by your local site and see if we can do your return.

I didn't realize that, MaryHu. Thanks for doing that. It really has been a huge help to my budget. It also makes me feel better to know professional has filed my return.

You can get a senior coffee at McDonalds. I think it's 50 cents, and you don't have to buy anything else, just walk in and buy the coffee.

You can get a free coffee at Denny's if you are a member of AARP from what they say. Haven't tried it yet.
