Funny, maybe literally, how the issues..and solutions have not changed much in the last 30 or so years.

Well, that was a time warp! Thanks....
I've been doing some medical training for firefighter/emt recently.
In the course of this, and learning my local department's protocols, I have discovered that here in our remote community, 80% of our cardiac arrest patients experience a return of spontaneous circulation. This is an extremely high rate, especially given our circumstances.
What contributes to this success:
- An incredibly high percentage of adults in our community are trained in delivering high-quality CPR. Heck, a lot of the high school kids are.
- We have AEDs all over the place, both in fixed locations and in the hands of individuals
- We have people who will step up and Do Something, right then and there when a problem happens, and not sit around and wait for help. Because help could be rather a while arriving.
This model seems to work wonders for something as serious as a heart attack. And requires training and certification a bit more intensive than firearms training typically is.
So I wonder about the idea that normal citizens can't be relied upon in time of trouble, and that we need to wait for the proper authorities...
Bae, Your example makes me wonder why there are so many gun owners and so few people are trained and certified in CPR and basic first aid. During the same time period how many lives were saved by citizens using firearms?
It seems like CPR would have a far higher rate of life saving usefulness, but gets far less attention.

Yes, Archie's solutions were too outrageous to even take seriously. Unfortunately, they're not considered outrageous today (at least by some).
