Amazing list. I had heard that medics used tampons to plug wounds, but I always wondered if that was another war-time myth.

:) There were a few in there that I was not even aware of- thanks!

Thanks Kay - loved it! I've read many times on the practical uses of feminine pads in medical emergencies, but never such an extensive list on tampons.

(My favorite was the fishing bobber.)

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel recently called Man, Woman, Wild (http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/man-woman-wild/videos/flaming-tampons.htm) where this subject came up. They used American tampons to start fires, as European tampons were not as flammable (the wife is British).

Man, Woman, Wild is pretty good. I watched it on Netflix. I also liked Survivorman, Dual Survivor, and Out of the Wild: Venezuela.

I saw one show (it may have been Man, Woman, Wild, or might have been Dual Survival, I can't remember) where they used a condom to hold water. I'm guessing it was the unlubricated kind. :laff:

I keep one in the glove box of the cars. Husband has always refered to it as "The Emergency Tampon". Now I will show him this and make truth to his statement.

I had known about a couple of these, and usually carry a few with me when hiking/backpacking. Usually this is in case of needing them for the intended use, but I have discussed with hiking friends the possibilities of wound care and firestarting. I hadn't thought about fishing bobbers though! Thanks for posting.
