I was giving thought to old sayings this morning, and jinxing oneself, and one saying I never use, is, "knock-on-wood".

Never fails, if I'm bordering on getting sick (cold, flu), and I chant the old saying, "knock-on-wood", I get sick.

How about you? Any old sayings you run from/steer clear of/avoid, due to jinxing?

Do you believe in jinxing?

In casual conversation, yes. It always seems to rain as soon as I wash my car. :)

But, seriously, I refuse to let anything like that have that kind of power in my life.

As soon as I put gasoline in the car the price will go down, sometimes even the same day.

The last tankful was on the way to a doctor appointment last week. The clinic is less than a half mile north of the gas station. After the appointment I drove past the station and the price for gas was six cents less...in less than an hour. Lordy.

I will likely need gas again in two weeks, or so, and I am certain that the price will be up again.

HAHA I don't have kids but agreed, at my ripe age I know enough to say "I will NEVER do xxx" because guess what? At some point I'll be doing xxx.

But that's not really the same as giving power to superstition. I will sometimes look at the relationships of certain events and see that as irony, the strange and odd and unexpected connection of things, but I don't see a jinx in it.

Humans are programmed to see patterns in things. We had a thread on this a while back where some posters put up some interesting links. It is how our little brains work--we thinkg "jinx" and then start relating subsequent actions and events in our lives to that jinx.

Healthcare people are oddly superstitious. If I say "its a good day ..." They freak out cause "now YOU ruined it!". If I mention a prior patient, they freak out cause "YOU just called them back to us. YOU have to do the admission when they get here". If I mention that its a busy day, some don't like that either ... I can't remember why .... If I mention ANYTHING that has never or rarely happened on that unit, then I'm causing it to occur soon and "its all YOUR fault".

These people supposedly studied science. Seems they practice the religion of superstition.

That reminds me that in a previous job (at the bead store) I would start thinking about certain customers (usually the distasteful ones that would drive me crazy) and the realize they hadn't been in for awhile - lo and behold (and this happened several times) they would come into the store that very same day as if by thinking about them I conjured them up. Pretty weird...

I always say "knock on wood", and then I'm always sorry later I said it! LOL

It always seems to work in reverse for me, causing bad luck....

BUT I keep on saying it....how stupid is that!! >8)

I kinda do. Not literally, but kind of rhetorically. Always good with Knock on wood though!

I need gas this week. I plan to fill up tomorrow, so wait until at least Thursday for when the price drops.

LOL, Jilly! Here's hoping so for your sake. (Knock on wood)... Neh... only kidding. :)

I'm pretty superstitious.
You actually have to knock on wood when you say it! (I keep a stick in my car for this reason - no kidding.)

Another one - washing your car does seem to increase the chance of rain.
And girls still know, be careful wearing white pants.
