My 85-year old Mom, who was extremely healthy for her age, had a minor stroke on Wednesday. She had a major one on Friday. Her right side is paralyzed from the neck down. She cannot swallow properly.

I've been with her the last few days. Even with all this, while she cannot speak clearly, she is amazingly clear-headed. She even reminded me to drink my tea, pick up the mail, and call my sister! (Though her speech is garbled, she will point and signal with her good hand and eyes.)

Because of this, her neurologist has decided she is a candidate for in-patient rehabilitation at a local facility. The DR says she is a fighter, and today she stood and sat in a chair with the assistance of two therapists.

She is very ill, but there is some hope. Our main problem now is to locate a place for her to recover as best she can.

Solid progress is entirely possible after stroke if the patient receives proper therapy and support. I've seen it in my own family. I wish the best for your mom's recovery.

Your mom sounds like she is mentally strong and hasn't given up. That is VITAL for her recovery.

Thanks, Everyone! Your thoughts and prayers were most welcome, as were your sharing your own experiences. We did locate a rehab that had room, and she got one of the two remaining beds. Now they have to evaluate to see what they can do for her.
