which simple living/frugal appliance/thing/item would you choose over everything else?

For me, it would be my clothesline. I've tried imagining what life would be like living without a proper old-fashioned outdoor pulley-clothesline, and the thought of such depresses me. IMO it would be like living in a house without a roof.

I think my sewing machine and all the stuff that goes with it. Without all that I would not be properly clothed. Not a pretty sight. Trust me.

I have a folding drying rack and I like it so much. I live in a tiny place and was hoping to find one that would fit inside the shower, but no luck.

I also need the slow cooker.

Ooops, guess that is three.

Water pump from the well. I can handle everything else but water that comes from the tap is like gold flowing to me.

My Mum sent stuff out to be laundered; sheets, pillowslips, towels and Dad's shirts.

Love everyone's entries!

I teetered between the clothesline and the garden, but because I squeak-out extra use out of my clothesline (longer season), and get more pleasure out of line-drying, the clothesline won-over.

I would choose one of my simple living books, such as the book "Less Is More: An Anthology of Ancient & Modern Voices Raised in Praise of Simplicity" compiled and edited by Goldian Vandenbroeck. It's like a simple living bible to me, and would keep me motivated and uplifted.

I might have trouble finding a simple living item that has more faithful than my bike or clothes line, but many years ago I spent what seemed like a fortune on a good home stereo system. We have some good public radio stations that have given me the gift of commercial free jazz, classical, and rock music and news. It filled my house with warm sound through 10 the ten years I went without a TV and many more years without repairs or problems.
