Her's something so fun: next week I'm going with my friend to have a violin appraised. This is a story about how cool our neighborhood is.

My friend Sue picked up the violin at the same time I picked up the piano again. She needed a violin to start lessons. She put our a message on our neighborhood chat list asking if anyone had a violin lying around to lend to her for a while. So a neighbor, Marsha, said "come over, I've got violins here that belonged to my husband (he is now dead.) You can take them home and try them out." Sue took two home, they both needed strings.

At the local violin shop she learned that one of them is a nice instrument and the second one is potentially VERY special. That guy in the shop donated expensive strings to the instrument, he wouldn't put on the cheaper strings she originally wanted. And he thanked her for bringing it in and mentioned worth perhaps $30,000+. Now, intrigued by this violin, she called our neighbor who is in the string section of the St. Louis Symphony. He came over, played it, and started having heart palpitations. He thinks it is VERY special, the kind of instrument that his peers would be using in the Symphony.

So next week we are taking it to--get this--the premier appraiser of stringed instruments in the U.S. who JUST HAPPENS to be in St. Louis for one day to evaluate instruments, getting stock for their spring sale. The timing is perfect! Sue has been keeping Marsha apprised the whole time but Marsha honestly doesn't want the violin back right now, she wants someone to use it. Marsha's husband did play violin in a hobby group. By trade he was in finance.

But my friend Sue won't use it to play hillbilly fiddle music, she's keeping it safely put away until the appraisal.

On Antique Roadshow, a violin someone threw away in the garbage was worth over $15,000 or more made by a famous Italian maker. I cannot remember exactly. It was dirty but because of the rosin on the bow and not "plain" dirt.

Update: sad news. The violin is not an important one. It's not made by the Italian master (as the interior label says) it's made by an unnamed Victorian German maker, someone unimportant. Too bad, we wanted it to be worth quarter of a million for the owner. But still, it and the bow would bring $5,000 at auction.

It was cool to meet the New York expert.

We still had a lot of fun with this experience!

Thanks for the update. I'm disappointed too but $5000 is nothing to sneeze at! :0!

Maybe now your friend will feel better about ripping some hillbilly fiddle music. (Little know fact: most violins love that.)

$5000 is good. Great even. Considering many violins are under $400. Sure wish they had more info about how her husband came to own it.

The husband starting playing violin at age 45, fairly late in life. He played in a little hobby group.
