I've been working with DD teaching her about planning menus around sales at the grocery store, what's in season, etc. The menus on this site are great! With just quick figuring I don't think we could beat the $100/person/month with these menus in our area, but they would not be at all outlandishly priced. Still a cool site 2 years after the OP.

I think there are some good ideas (and recipes) on that blog, but it should be more an advisory than a procedure. Purchasing food at Walmart may save a family money in the short term, but the company's corner-cutting, the weight it throws behind cheap labor (both within the store and at its suppliers), and the unsustainable factory farming required to provide Walmart with food at the prices they're willing to pay all have a cost which is subsidized by every single American taxpayer. Even at places like ALDI and Big Lots, the emphasis is on processed food -- convenience products, meat injected with saline solution (which functions as both a tenderizer/flavoring agent and as a weight padder), GMO products, ... By all means, if that's your budget, that's your budget, and there are some good ideas there. But to do it just to push down the cost of food, well, I find the savings somewhat illusory.
